I've been shooting on my D850 for years doing mostly street and landscape but I just landed my first indoor wedding gig in Chicago for next month and I am hyped! Problem is I've always been a natural light purist and now I'm realizing my gear is lacking for a dark reception hall. I need a reliable speedlight that won't flake out on me mid-dance.

I know the basics of TTL and HSS but the sheer amount of options is making my head spin. Here is what I'm looking for:

  • super fast recycling time
  • reliable TTL (I cant be fiddling with manual in that chaos)
  • budget around $350
  • compatible with Nikons creative lighting system

Should I just bite the bullet and buy a used SB-5000 or are the Godox V1 units actually as good as everyone says?

Like someone mentioned, the switch from AAs to lithium packs is the biggest jump in quality of life for wedding shooters. I spent years juggling Eneloops with an old Nikon SB-910 Speedlight and missing shots because I couldnt swap them fast enough. It was kinda stressful tbh. If you want to stay under that $350 mark, the Godox V860III-N TTL Speedlight for Nikon is the direct alternative to the V1. It uses the same battery system but has a standard head.

  • Much cheaper than a new SB-5000
  • Includes a modeling light which helps the D850 focus in dark halls
  • Battery lasts for about 450 full-power pops I still keep a used Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight in my bag as a fail-safe backup because Nikon glass and electronics just talk to each other perfectly, but for the main event, the Godox speed is just hard to beat tho.

Honestly, I love the Godox V1-N Round Head Flash for Nikon! Its a fantastic choice for your first wedding. My tip: focus on the lithium-ion battery system. It provides much faster recycling than traditional AAs, so you wont miss any shots during the dance. This flash is an amazing, cost-effective alternative that fits your budget while maintaining reliable TTL. Its honestly amazing gear tho...
