I've been shooting with Nikon for over a decade now and honestly I thought I had my kit sorted out forever. But my trusty SB-700 just started smoking - literally - during a test shoot today and I have a huge wedding gig this Saturday at a dimly lit venue in downtown Seattle. I'm panicking a little because I usually rotate between my D850 and my D7500 for backup and I need something that talks perfectly to both without me having to fiddle with menus for twenty minutes.

Ive been looking at a few options but the info online is so conflicting:

  • SB-5000 (super expensive though)
  • Godox V1 (worried about the hot shoe breaking)
  • Used SB-910

I've heard mixed things about the third party brands lately especially with i-TTL accuracy across different bodies. Is there a specific model that handles the metering consistently across both full frame and crop sensors? I need fast recycle times because the ceremony is gonna be quick. My budget is sitting around 400 or 500 max if I can push it. Is the newer radio control stuff on the 5000 worth the massive jump in price or should I stick to what I know? I really cant afford for my light to die again when the couple is walking down the aisle...

Unfortunately, I had issues with newer gear.

Third-party gear is fine for casual shoots, but the i-TTL on native stuff is way more consistent when swapping between bodies. If you want reliability, stay within the brand ecosystem. You dont really need the radio stuff unless you are doing complex off-camera setups anyway... basically any native unit will do.
