I finally pulled the trigger on a Z6 II after months of debating but now im staring at my cart and realized I forgot all the extra stuff. Im heading to Iceland in like three weeks for a landscape trip so I need to get this sorted fast. For storage, im stuck between getting a single 128gb Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B card or just grabbing a couple of 256gb ProGrade V60 SD cards. My logic was that the CFexpress is obviously faster and more durable for the weather there but its so pricey and then I have to buy a specific reader too which eats into my budget. Is the speed difference really that noticeable if im mostly doing landscape shots and not heavy video?
Then theres the battery situation. I definitely need at least one spare. I was looking at the official Nikon EN-EL15c because its the safe bet but then I saw those SmallRig ones that have the USB-C port built right into the battery. Being able to charge from a power bank without a separate cradle while hiking sounds amazing but I dont want it to fry my new body or give me weird error messages in the middle of a shoot. Budget is pretty tight, maybe 350-400 dollars max for all the extras so I gotta choose wisely. What do you guys think is the better move for a travel setup like this?
Honestly, go with the official gear for a trip like Iceland. I learned the hard way once with a knockoff battery that just quit on me during a freezing morning shoot. It showed 40% then... poof, dead. I wouldnt risk a 3rd party battery like those USB ones in the cold. Stick with the Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery for peace of mind. For storage, the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B Card 128GB is way more rugged than any SD. I have seen those tiny plastic ribs on SD cards get brittle and snap off in sub-zero temps. You really dont want a piece of plastic stuck inside your new Z6 II slot. Get one solid card and the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B USB 3.2 Gen 2 Reader and you will be set.
Re: "I've gotta agree about those batteries, the USB..." - unfortunately, I had issues with third party ones failing in low temps. Not as good as expected for the price. Here is a better path:
I've gotta agree about those batteries, the USB ones are sadly unreliable in the frost. I was super disappointed with the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold because the write speeds felt sluggish during a long bracketed sequence. For Iceland, skip the SD and grab a SanDisk Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B 128GB. The faster bus speed is honestly worth the extra few bucks when the weather is brutal.
