Ive been looking to upgrade my glass for a wedding im shooting in Philly this July and I keep seeing people rave about the Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art but I'm kinda stuck because some reviews say it's bulky with the FTZ adapter and I should just wait for more native Z mount stuff to drop. I also saw some buzz about the 50mm 1.4 DG DN but i dont know if that's actually out for Nikon yet or if im gonna be stuck using the older DSLR versions forever. My budget is capped at about 1100 bucks so i cant really go for the crazy high end Nikon S glass. Does the autofocus actually hold up with the adapter for moving subjects or am I gonna regret not going native...

Honestly im super satisfied with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Nikon F on my Z mount setup. It is a bit heavy tho but the autofocus works well for me even with the adapter. No complaints so far... just make sure your firmware is totally updated before the wedding. It feels a lot safer than waiting for native lenses that dont exist yet.

Checked specs on Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Nikon F and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Nikon F. The 105mm has better MTF scores, tho the 50mm is easier on the wrists.

To add to the point above: I went through a similar struggle last year when I was prepping for some engagement shots near Rittenhouse Square. I actually ended up grabbing the Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Nikon F instead of the 85 because the technical specs are just on another level. It was basically a cine lens design adapted for stills, so the clinical sharpness is kinda mind-blowing even at f/1.4. I was using it with the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter and the autofocus felt just as snappy as my native glass for portraits. Ngl, it is a total tank to carry around all day, but I was so satisfied with how it handled the weird lighting in some of those old Philly venues. If you want something slightly different from the standard 85mm look, this thing is a beast for wedding work.

Stumbled on this thread and figured I would share my experience because I was in the exact same boat before a big gig last year. I ended up picking up the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art for Nikon F to use with my Z6 and honestly I have no complaints about the reliability. I was terrified the FTZ would make it hunt in low light during the reception but it actually felt snappier than it ever did on my old DSLRs. The hit rate for eye-autofocus is basically near perfect which is a huge relief when you only have one shot at the kiss or the first dance. Couple of technical things that helped me stay happy with the setup:

  • Use the Sigma USB Dock for Nikon F to update the lens firmware to the latest version, it genuinely improves the stepping motor response on Z bodies.
  • Stick to AF-C for everything. The native Z tracking works way better with these adapted lenses than the old AF-S modes did. That 135mm is a bit of a workout for your forearms but the rendering is just so clean. If you can handle the weight it is a total workhorse.
