im honestly so over reading reviews right now because everyone says something different. i keep seeing the 14-24mm f2.8 dg dn art is the king for sony but then people complain about the front element being a bulb so i cant even use my normal filters without some massive expensive holder. then there is the 16-28mm contemporary which is lighter but is the image quality actually gonna hold up for big prints? i need something for my trip to rainier next month and im stuck.

  • budget is strictly under 1300
  • needs to be light enough for 10 mile hikes
  • must be sharp enough for my a7iv
  • weather sealing is a big deal because of the rain

is the art series really worth the extra weight or should i just stick with the smaller one?

Honestly if youre doing 10 miles your back will hate the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN Art. Its just too heavy for long hikes... Im really satisfied with the Sigma 16-28mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary though. Its light and the internal zoom keeps things sealed up nicely. No complaints on sharpness for my prints either. TL;DR: Go Contemporary. Its safer for your back and fits normal filters.

Been thinking about the budget... those 14-24 filter holders are ridiculously expensive so be careful with that route. If you want Art quality without the weight, you might want to consider the Sigma 20mm f1.4 DG DN Art. Its weather sealed and takes normal filters which is way cheaper in the long run. Quick question tho, are you planning on taking a tripod for long exposures or are you mostly shooting handheld on the move?

Rainier is going to be absolutely amazing! Youll have a fantastic time, but honestly, the weather there is no joke and the mist can be a real gear killer. Before I give a final recommendation, are you planning on using circular polarizers or ND filters for any waterfall shots? That really dictates if you can safely handle a bulbous front element or not. If you want a more reliable and methodical setup for those 10-mile treks, you should seriously look at the Sigma 20mm f1.4 DG DN Art. It is basically a technical masterpiece! The image quality is just stunning for big prints on your a7iv and it has much better weather sealing than the Contemporary line. It takes standard 82mm filters, so no expensive custom holders are required. It even has a specialized MFL switch to lock focus so you dont accidentally bump it while hiking in the rain... Its a fantastic middle ground!
