I’ve got my sister’s engagement shoot coming up next Saturday and I really need to upgrade from the kit lens on my X-T5. I’m looking at Sigma since they're way more affordable than Fuji glass right now. I keep seeing people rave about the 56mm f1.4 for that creamy bokeh, but then I read a few reviews saying the autofocus can be hunting or slow on the newer 40mp sensors like mine. Then there's the 18-50mm f2.8 which is more versatile but is it actually good enough for real portrait work? I've only got about $450 to spend and I'm panicking a bit about which one to pull the trigger on. Which Sigma is actually the best for portraits?
I've been shooting with the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X on my high-res body for months now. The technical performance is actually excellent and AF hunting is barely noticeable if you keep the firmware updated. While the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X is a solid zoom, it simply wont give you that creamy subject separation you need for an engagement session.
> I keep seeing people rave about the 56mm f1.4 for that creamy bokeh Honestly, just get the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X! I use it on my X-T5 and it is absolutely amazing for the price. Dont worry about the AF stuff, it is fast enough for portraits and that bokeh is just fantastic! It fits your budget perfectly too. You wont find anything better for engagement shots under $450, seriously!
