I just bought this Panasonic GH5 used for my sisters wedding next month in Chicago and I'm honestly about to pull my hair out. I thought the camera would just work but the audio sounds like it's coming from underwater or something its really bad. There's this constant static sound and when I went outside to test it the wind just ruined everything.

I've been looking online for like three hours now and people keep talking about phantom power and shotgun mics and 3.5mm jacks and I literally have no idea what any of that means. I just want something I can plug in and it makes people sound clear when they're talking. My budget is pretty tight like maybe $150 or $200 max because I already spent way too much on the lens and the tripod and everything else.

Is there like one specific mic that everyone uses for this camera that isn't gonna break the bank or require me to go to film school just to turn it on? I'm so lost and the wedding is coming up fast so I really need to figure this out before I mess up her big day. Sorry if this is a total beginner question but what is the best external microphone for Panasonic GH5 that a total idiot can actually use?

In my experience, the onboard GH5 preamps are noisy, but the Rode VideoMic Pro+ Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone solves that with its +20dB gain stage. I remember using this setup for a windy lakeside ceremony in Chicago actually, and the Rycote Lyre mount kept audio clean while I moved. It plugs into the 3.5mm jack and auto-powers on. Its easily the best plug-and-play choice for under $200.

I've been thinking about your situation and you should really look at the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Super-Cardioid Directional Shotgun Microphone. I've used this on my GH5 for tons of gigs and the physical gain dial is revolutionary! It lets you bypass those noisy internal preamps easily. It's fantastic for weddings because it's basically plug-and-play but gives you that professional edge you're looking for without the high price tag.
