What are the actual go-to tripod legs and heads for a heavy Canon R3 and 400mm f/2.8 setup that wont show any sag? Ive been shooting for about 12 years now and always thought my trusty old Manfrotto 055 was a beast but man, this new glass is a whole different ballgame. I just upgraded to the 400mm prime and the weight is causing some serious micro-vibrations and slight creep when I lock the head, which is basically ruining my sharpest shots during lower light.

I am headed out to Olympic National Park in about three weeks so I need something that can handle the damp, muddy conditions of the PNW without seizing up. I'm looking to spend maybe $900 tops for the whole kit, or I could stretch it a bit if the legs and head are sold separately and actually worth the premium. Is carbon fiber still the move here or should I go back to aluminum for the sheer mass? People keep mentioning Really Right Stuff or Gitzo but those prices are kinda eye-watering... are the Benro or Leofoto clones actually stable enough for this kind of payload or am I just gonna regret it? Curious what people are actually using in the field for these big white lenses and if there's a specific gimbal or heavy-duty ball head that doesn't slip.

Unfortunately, many budget clones just dont survive the grit of the PNW. I had issues with leg locks seizing on cheaper brands after a single week in the field.

  • Leofoto LN-364C Carbon Fiber Tripod: Solid stability but unfortunately the sealing is not as good as expected for mud.
  • Benro GH2 Gimbal Head: Handles the weight, tho panning is less fluid than I hoped. Carbon fiber remains superior for dampening those specific micro-vibrations.

You might want to be careful with standard ball heads in the PNW mud. I would suggest looking at:
