I recently purchased the new Canon EOS R50 mirrorless camera and am looking to improve the audio quality for my videos. The built-in mic is okay, but I want to take things to the next level with an external microphone.

I mostly shoot vlogs, interviews, and some event coverage. I need a mic that will give me clear, crisp audio even in noisy environments. Ideally, I'm looking for something that is:

  • Compatible with the Canon EOS R50's mic input
  • Good sound quality for the price
  • Easy to use and set up
  • Compact and portable for on-the-go shooting

What mics are you using with your Canon EOS R50? Any particular models I should look at or avoid?

Man, the internal audio on these small bodies is just the worst... it drives me crazy how much electronic noise they pick up! I've lost so many good clips to that annoying background hum and it's just so frustrating to deal with. If you want a real technical breakdown, you've gotta compare the Rode VideoMic GO II against the Deity V-Mic D4. I'm such a fan of the Deity because the 76dB Signal-to-Noise ratio is absolutely amazing for a passive mic! Most people don't realize how much that helps when the R50 preamps are struggling. The frequency response is super solid too, covering 20Hz to 20kHz with such clarity! I love how crisp the highs are on the D4 compared to the slightly muddier profile of the Rode. For on-the-go shooting, that Deity shock mount is also way more robust for handling vibrations. It's a total win for anyone obsessed with clean data!

Building on the earlier suggestion about keeping things simple, I absolutely love the R50 for its size but you gotta match it with the right gear! If you want something that is 100% reliable and wont die on you because you forgot to charge it, you really need to look at passive mics. I've been doing this for years and nothing beats the peace of mind of a mic that runs off the cameras power. Check these out:

  • Rode VideoMic GO II is basically the gold standard for vlogging. It is super light and the sound is crisp as heck.
  • Rode VideoMicro II if you want something even tinier that still sounds amazing. I use the Go II for almost everything now because it is just so easy to throw in a bag and go. No switches, no batteries, just plug it in and you're golden! Its honestly a game changer for event coverage too because you never have to check if its actually on... it just is!

DJI Mic 2 is a good choice for EOS R50, compact, and easy to use.

Re: "For versatility, I'd suggest the Sennheiser MKE 400...."

  • I definitely agree that the MKE 400 is a solid choice, but honestly, for a camera as small as the R50, I usually lean toward something even simpler. I learned my lesson years ago at a wedding when my powered mic died halfway through because I forgot to swap the AAA battery. Since then, I've been a bit paranoid about anything with its own power switch. For vlogging, I mostly stick to passive mics that draw power directly from the camera jack. If you want something reliable that wont break the bank or fail on you, these have worked well for me:
  • Rode VideoMicro II
  • Sennheiser+MKE+200&linkCode=osi&tag=7649-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 The sound quality on both is a massive jump over the internal ones. I personally prefer the Rode because it doesnt have any buttons or switches to accidentally bump while you're moving around. It just works. Plus, the price point on these makes them way easier to justify if you're just starting out... they're basically indestructible.

For versatility, I'd suggest the Sennheiser MKE 400. It's a compact shotgun mic that works great on-camera but can also be used off-camera with the right accessories. The sound quality is excellent, and it has a shock mount to reduce handling noise.
