What accessories are actually essential for a new Nikon DSLR owner? I just grabbed a D7500 for my trip to Glacier National Park next month and Im trying to figure out what else I need.
I saw some people online saying a 50mm prime is a must have but then others say a good tripod is more important for the mountains. I only have about $200 left to spend so I cant get everything. Should I prioritize a circular polarizer for the sky or maybe just a better strap because the stock one is super uncomfortable... just not sure whats gonna give me the most bang for my buck. I read that filters can be a waste if they are cheap but the expensive ones are so pricey.
For your Nikon D7500, I recommend prioritizing optics and ergonomics. I've been really satisfied with these specific components:
In my experience, Glacier gets your gear way dustier than you'd expect. Over the years, I've learned that basic maintenance is key for these trips. I once ruined a whole afternoon of shots because of a smudge I couldnt clean properly.
Re: "For your Nikon D7500, I recommend prioritizing optics..." - honestly, those are good recs but you gotta be careful with that $200 limit. Before I dive in, are you planning on doing a lot of dawn or dusk shooting, or just casual daytime hikes? Glacier is famous for its blue hour and that changes what gear matters most. When I first took my gear out west, I realized pretty quick that one battery isnt enough when youre shooting hundreds of photos a day. I would skip the 50mm for now and grab an extra Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery. It saved me when my primary died right as the light got good. Since you mentioned the tripod, the Manfrotto Compact Action Aluminum Tripod is a decent option that wont break the bank or your back while hiking. Its not as beefy as the pro stuff but it will hold a D7500 steady enough for some nice waterfall shots. Also, if you want a prime later, the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G is a way better focal length for that camera than the 50mm.
