okay so i just treated myself to a leica m11 and im honestly terrified of dropping it lol. this is my first real camera like this and its so pretty i dont want to mess it up. im taking it to florence next month for my anniversary trip so i really need a strap that looks good but is actually safe. i see people talking about lug protectors and different types of leather like cordovan or whatever but i have no idea what that means or if it matters. my budget is maybe 200 bucks. sorry if this is super basic i just dont want to buy the wrong thing. what are the must-have leather straps for an m11 that wont let me down?
Regarding what was said about "> im honestly terrified of dropping it lol..." i totally get it. honestly i had a really bad experience with a cheaper boutique strap i found online recently. it looked great in photos but it felt so flimsy in person i was literally holding my breath every time the camera swung. such a waste of money tbh and i ended up just throwing it in a drawer because i couldnt trust it. you asked about cordovan... basically its a super high-end leather thats really dense and durable. unlike cheap calfskin it doesnt stretch or crack easily which is vital if you dont want your M11 hitting the pavement. i eventually upgraded to the Artisan and Artist ACAM-280 Leather Strap and the difference is night and day. it has those built-in leather flaps called lug protectors so the split rings dont chew up your camera finish. it feels very intentional and sturdy. if you want something that feels even more secure for those crowded streets in florence check out the Rock n Roll Straps M-Type Classic Leather Strap. they are handmade and much thicker than the stock strap. i know 200 bucks sounds like a lot for a piece of leather but when you think about the cost of that sensor... its worth every penny for the peace of mind. dont settle for the thin stuff just because it looks vintage on instagram... you need something that actually holds up.
Jumping in here... unfortunately i’ve had issues with many boutique leather straps that prioritize the look over actual tensile strength. it’s not as good as expected when you realize the leather is stretching out or the stitching is pulling after just a few days of heavy use. you asked about cordovan—that basically refers to leather from a specific part of a horse hide. it’s very dense and water-resistant which is great for travel, but it can be really stiff initially. honestly for a trip to florence where you’ll be walking miles, you need a balance of safety and comfort. the m11 is surprisingly heavy once you have a fast lens on it. quick tips:
> im honestly terrified of dropping it lol I totally feel that. I unfortunately bought a cheap luxury strap first and had issues with it feeling really flimsy... not as good as expected. If you want to save money, check out Gordy's Camera Straps Neck Strap with Lug Protectors. Its way under $200 and those protectors are basically just little leather bits that keep the metal rings from scratching your m11. Super safe.
