I just got a Sony a6400 and I have no idea what I'm doing honestly so sorry if this is super basic. I'm going to New York next week and really want to try street photography like those cool candid shots you see online. I heard Tamron is cheaper but good? I saw a 17-70mm one and then a 28-75mm and I'm totally lost on which one fits my camera or if they even do the same thing. My logic was that a bigger range is better but then someone said something about aperture and now my head is spinning. I have about $700 to spend and I need to order it like today so it gets here in time. Which one should I actually get for just walking around the city?...

Honestly, just go with the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD Sony E. I have been using it for a year on my a6000 series and I am super satisfied with the results. Do not touch the 28-75mm for street stuff on that camera because 28mm is gonna feel way too cramped when you are surrounded by buildings. It is meant for full frame cameras anyway. Here is why the 17-70 is the move:

  • It has Vibration Compensation which helps keep your shots steady.
  • The f/2.8 aperture is constant, so it works well when the sun starts going down.
  • It is actually made for your specific sensor size. If you want to save some cash, look at the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Sony E. It is way smaller and usually costs around 500 dollars, leaving you extra money for pizza in NYC. Both are solid, but the Tamron has more reach if you wanna zoom in on people.
