I'm so annoyed trying to decide between the Sigma 18-50mm and that 23mm f1.4 prime for my X-T5. My logic was the zoom is versatile for a NYC trip next week but the 1.4 is better for night street shots. My $550 budget is firm... which one actually handles the 40mp sensor better?

To add to the point above: I have always been quite conservative with my equipment choices because I prioritize reliability and image quality over everything else. In my experience, these high-resolution sensors are extremely demanding. I once took a trip where I relied on a versatile zoom for the sake of convenience, and it was a mistake I wont repeat. When I reviewed the images later, the fine textures simply lacked the definition I expected from such a high-end body. I learned that day that more complex glass often struggles to resolve the full 40 megapixels, especially at the edges of the frame... it was a hard lesson. My current setup is built around the idea that one high-quality focal length is better than a compromise. If you want to maximize your technical output in NYC, sticking with a dedicated design is the safer path to ensure your files actually hold up under scrutiny. It is better to have fewer, sharper images than a collection of shots that look soft when you zoom in tho.
