Which handgrips provide the best ergonomics for Panasonic G9II?

Ive been using Lumix forever but the G9II body is giving me literal hand cramps which is stressing me out since I have a wedding shoot in three weeks.

  • budget is $130
  • needs an integrated Arca Swiss base
  • must add height for my pinky

Does anyone know which grip actually fills the palm better?

Saw this earlier but just now responding... honestly hand cramps during a long wedding day are the absolute worst. Ive tried many different rigs over the years and in my experience, skipping the simple plates and going for a full cage is the way to go if you want real palm support. I currently run the SmallRig Full Cage for Panasonic LUMIX G9 II 4159 and it basically transforms the camera feel. It adds that extra half-inch of height so your pinky isnt just dangling in the air, plus the Arca Swiss base is integrated into the bottom so you dont need extra hardware. The cage actually wraps slightly around the grip side which fills the palm way better than just a flat plate. Since you have that $130 budget, this is way cheaper and leaves you extra cash for extra batteries. It makes the body feel much more substantial which is kinda necessary when youre shooting for 8 plus hours.

tbh weddings are brutal on the hands. i was pretty stressed about the same thing with my lumix and eventually settled on a setup that works well for me without breaking the bank. if you really want to fill the palm and fix that pinky issue before your shoot, here are two ways to go about it:

this is honestly the safest route for a wedding pro. i have no complaints about how this feels in the hand. it makes the camera body significantly taller so your pinky actually has a place to grip, and the extra battery life is a huge peace of mind during long ceremonies. it usually sits around 300 dollars new, but if you look for a used one it might get closer to your budget. i feel way more confident with the extra surface area to grab onto.

if you want to stay strictly under $130, this is a solid choice. it has the integrated arca swiss base you need and adds just enough height to stop the hand fatigue. it wont fill your palm as much as the battery grip, but for the price, i was very satisfied with the build. it doesnt block the battery door or the screen either which is always a worry. just my two cents but id go for the official grip if you can find a deal. lmk if you have more questions about the weight balance with bigger lenses!

I've dealt with hand cramps on the G9II as well because the body feels a bit slim. You might want to consider being careful with certain plates since some actually make the ergonomics worse. From my experience, I would suggest these specific options:

  • SmallRig L-Shape Mount Plate for Panasonic LUMIX G9 II 4148. This costs roughly 40 dollars and includes the integrated Arca Swiss base. It adds about half an inch of height which is usually enough for the pinky to rest comfortably.
  • Make sure to verify the side clearance for your cables. I have seen some plates obstruct the ports if they arent adjusted correctly on the sliding rail.
  • You might want to consider the SmallRig Cage for Panasonic LUMIX G9 II 4159 if the L-plate isnt thick enough. It provides a much more substantial grip for the palm compared to just adding height. The L-plate is probably your best bet for that wedding tho...
