I just picked up the Lumix S5II because I am heading out to Iceland in literally five days and I am freaking out because I don't have any of the extra gear yet. I spent way more than I planned on the body and lens so I only have like 300 bucks left to get everything I need for the trip. I did some digging online and everyone keeps saying to get extra batteries which makes sense but then half the people say only buy the official Panasonic ones while the other half say the Wasabi Power ones are fine and wont fry the camera so I dont know who to believe... its so confusing and I dont want to ruin a brand new camera. Also keep seeing people talk about getting a SmallRig cage for mounting stuff but I am mostly doing landscapes and maybe some light vlogging for my family so is that actually a must-have or just for pro filmmakers? I really need to get this stuff ordered like tonight so it gets here before my flight on Thursday. Since the weather there is gonna be brutal I am also worried about lens filters and if I need a specific strap or something because the one in the box feels kinda cheap and uncomfortable for hiking all day. What are the actual must-have accessories for this Lumix setup that I actually need to buy right now?
I was so satisfied with how the K&F Concept 77mm Slim UV Filter handled the mist at Skogafoss without ruining my shots. It basically saved me from constantly wiping the glass. Skip the cage for hiking, its just dead weight tbh. Grab a Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II instead... youll definitely need the speed for those big Lumix files and theyre way cheaper than other brands.
Man, Iceland in five days is absolute madness but you are gonna love it. Since you're on a budget and heading into the cold, be really careful with those batteries. I've used off-brands before and they're usually fine for a backyard BBQ, but freezing temperatures make them act super weird and drop from 40% to dead in seconds. I'd honestly suggest grabbing at least one official Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Battery so you have a reliable primary. Maybe grab a Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Dual USB Charger as your backups if you really need to save money, but keep those spares inside your jacket close to your body heat so they dont die prematurely. Forget the cage for now. If you're just doing landscapes and family vlogs, it's just extra weight and bulk you dont need while trekking through 40mph winds. Spend that money on a Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap instead. The one that comes in the box is basically a torture device after two hours of hiking and the PD one lets you swap positions instantly. Also, make sure to get a decent filter to protect that glass from the sea spray and volcanic grit. A Hoya 77mm NXT Plus UV Filter or whatever size fits your lens is a lifesaver. Oh, and buy a massive pack of microfiber cloths. The mist from the waterfalls is gonna be everywhere and you'll be wiping your lens every thirty seconds. Just stay under budget and enjoy the trip... it's gonna be epic.
Re: "I was so satisfied with how the K&F..." - honestly, watch out for the salt spray. I once spent a whole night cleaning my sensor because I didnt have the right supplies. It sucked.
@Reply #4 - good point! Honestly, bookmarking these threads is the only way I keep track of the Lumix vs Sony debates myself. You might want to consider how easily the small things can ruin a trip when you're stressed about gear. Reminds me of when my buddy went to the Andes with a brand new setup. He spent weeks worrying about weather sealing and battery specs compared to his old Nikon. It was a complete mess because he:
Saved for later, ty!
