I've been looking to upgrade my kit for a series of outdoor portraits I'm doing for a client next month in Chicago. I've mostly been using an old kit lens and it just isnt cutting it anymore. I did some digging and everyone keeps talking about the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN Art because its sharp and way lighter than the old version.
But then I saw some reviews for the 105mm f1.4 and people say the bokeh is just unbeatable even though its a total brick to carry around. I have about 1100 dollars saved up so I can afford one but not both. Is the extra weight of the 105mm actually worth the trouble for handheld work or should I just stick with the 85mm for the Sony body?

Honestly, I had issues with the weight of that Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art almost immediately. Its optical performance is legendary, but it's not as good as expected for a long outdoor shoot because your arms just give out. Its actually an older DSLR design with a built-in adapter basically. Unfortunately, carrying 1.6kg around Chicago for hours is a recipe for shaky, blurry shots. On the other hand, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art was built specifically for mirrorless. The AF motors are way faster. I did some side-by-side tests and while the 105mm has that creamy compression, the 85mm is just more practical. Tbh, the 85mm is the smarter play. I also tried the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 but the Sigma Art glass is just better for professional work. Stick with the 85mm... let me know if you need more technical spec data!
