My Nikon D850 keeps freezing up during bursts and it is driving me absolutely insane. I missed a perfect shot of a hawk yesterday because the buffer just wouldnt clear and now I am scrambling because I have a big trip to Yellowstone next Friday. I really need to upgrade my SD cards like yesterday.

I am torn between:

  • SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB (the 200MB/s version)
  • Sony TOUGH-G series

The Sony is honestly pushing my budget since I dont want to spend over $100 but if it actually fixes the lag I might just bite the bullet. Is the Sony really that much better for Nikon bodies or am I just overthinking it?

Man, the D850 is such a beast but those 45MP RAW files are absolutely massive. I had the exact same freezing issue when I first started out. Tbh the SanDisk you mentioned is probably the UHS-I version which just cant keep up with high-speed bursts. I have been using the Sony SF-G Tough 128GB UHS-II V90 for a while now and I am incredibly satisfied with it. Here is why it works well:

  • Write speeds: It clears the buffer almost instantly.
  • Build quality: Its super sturdy for hiking.
  • Performance: No more locked-up menus while the card is writing. Honestly, bite the bullet for the Sony. You dont want to be in the park staring at a blinking green light while a grizzly walks away... If that is too pricey, look at the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-II V90 as a backup. Just make sure its V90!

Just catching up on this thread and honestly, the D850 buffer is such a legendary beast to tame! I went down a total rabbit hole last year trying to DIY the ultimate high-speed kit for an airshow because I was obsessed with finding the best data-per-dollar ratio without paying the Sony tax. I spent like three nights straight running benchmarks on every card I could find! Here is what I discovered during my deep dive:

  • I eventually landed on the Sabrent 128GB Rocket SDXC UHS-II V90 and it is absolutely amazing. Most people dont realize it uses high-end flash that maintains its speed way better than the generic stuff.
  • If you want something super robust, the Angelbird AV Pro SD MK2 V90 128GB is a total sleeper hit. These are built for cinema cameras so they handle the heat of long bursts like a pro. The technical reason for the lag is usually the sustained write speed dropping off. If the card controller gets too hot, it throttles and your D850 just chokes on those 45MP files. Switching to a proper V90 card with a solid controller basically gives your camera a new life! Have a blast in Yellowstone!

> The Sony is honestly pushing my budget Look at Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB UHS-II V90. My data shows it matches Sonys 300MB/s write speeds for less cash. It is the most cost-effective way to clear that buffer.

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming in. Super helpful discussion.

Wait, if youre hitting that buffer wall on a D850, you might want to look at Lexar or Delkin. I switched over a while back after some lag issues with older SanDisk cards and the speed jump was pretty obvious. If you cant justify the Sony price tag, these are solid alternatives that wont fail you in Yellowstone.

Been thinking about this thread for a bit and man, I have to disagree with the idea that any of these options are actually reasonable. I've been shooting since the film days and the way memory card companies operate now is honestly just a scam. It drives me crazy that we pay thousands for a D850 and then have to pay a massive buffer tax just to keep it from locking up.

  • The pricing for these high-speed cards is just highway robbery at this point. It is basically a tiny piece of plastic with a tiny chip, but they charge us like it is made of solid gold.
  • It feels like the manufacturers are just lazy. They keep pushing huge file sizes but dont bother making the buffer tech affordable or standard.
  • I am so tired of seeing Pro labels on everything when half the time you're just paying for a sticker and a marketing campaign. Its just exhausting having to deal with this every time you upgrade a body. We are basically being punished for wanting to use the features we already paid for. Yellowstone should be about the views, not worrying if your expensive piece of plastic is gonna throw a tantrum.
