so im finally taking my nikon z7ii out to iceland next month and i really need a tripod that doesnt weigh a ton. ive been looking at the peak design carbon fiber one but honestly it seems super overpriced for how thin those bottom legs are... like is it actually stable in the wind?

also saw some people mentioning the benro mefoto series but they look a bit bulky for hiking. i mostly do landscape stuff so i need something that wont shake during a 2 second exposure. trying to stay under $350ish if possible since i already spent a fortune on lenses. whats the best balance of weight vs stability for the z series right now?

just saw this... thought i would chime in since i just did a similar trip. iceland wind is literally legendary for knocking over gear so youre right to be worried about those thin legs on the peak design. quick question before i dive in too deep tho - whats the heaviest lens youre bringing? the weight distribution on a z7ii really changes depending on if youve got a prime or a big telephoto on there. ive been really happy with the Sirui AM-254 Carbon Fiber Tripod with K-20X Ball Head for my travel kit. it works well because it skips the center column which makes it way more rigid in the wind. its super stable and i have no complaints about the build quality for the price. another solid bet is the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod. its a bit of a clone of higher end gear but its incredibly sturdy for long exposures and sits right in your budget. both are miles better for actual landscape work than the super thin travel tripods.

honestly been really happy with my setup for the z series lately. since you mentioned iceland wind, you should check out stuff without a center column. i have been using the Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod with A-10R Ball Head and it is basically a tank for the price. no complaints at all about the stability during 2-5 second exposures.

  • no center column means the legs meet right at the apex, which is way more stable than a center post extension
  • 10-layer carbon fiber actually absorbs vibrations better than the thinner legs on the peak design
  • rated for about 33lbs which is overkill for a z7ii but thats exactly what you want for wind resistance another solid budget choice is the Slik PRO CF-634 Carbon Fiber Tripod. it is super light for hiking but still feels really stiff. both these keep you well under that 350 limit so you can save cash for extra batteries... iceland cold kills them fast. let me know if you want more specs on the leg diameters or load data.

> is it actually stable in the wind? Not sure but i used a light one once and it was shaky in the wind. maybe look at something slightly heavier for those long exposures tbh.
