Im actually so annoyed right now because I just got my Mini 4 Pro and I cant even take off from my own backyard without the gimbal throwing a fit. Every time I try to launch from the grass, even when its trimmed short, the sensors go crazy or I get that gimbal motor overloaded warning and Im honestly terrified Im gonna burn the motor out before I even get a decent flight in. Its so stressful because I spent a lot of money on this thing and the ground where I live is just super dusty and uneven which is a total nightmare for these tiny drones. Im planning a hiking trip to the PNW next week and I know the sand and dirt there is gonna be even worse so I desperately need a solid landing pad that actually works.

Im looking for something that fits these specs:

  • Must be weighted or have really good stakes because I dont want it blowing away and hitting the props
  • Needs to fold up small enough to fit in my small hiking pack
  • Budget is around $25 to $40 max
  • Ideally something double sided with a bright color so I can see it from the air when Im coming back in

Ive seen those cheap orange ones on Amazon but they look like theyd just fly away the second the downwash hits them or a slight breeze kicks up. Has anyone found one thats actually heavy enough to stay put without being a massive pain to carry around?

Honestly, I feel your pain. Ive ruined a gimbal before trying to take off from short grass and its a total nightmare. Over the years Ive tried a bunch of these, and those cheap pop-up circle ones are basically kites... total waste of money if there is even a tiny breeze. For your PNW trip, you definitely want something with actual weight to it so it stays put. In my experience, these two are the only ones worth the bag space:

  • PGYTECH Drone Landing Pad Pro 50cm Double Sided Waterproof
  • This is the gold standard imo. It folds into a flat rectangle instead of a circle so it actually fits in a hiking pack. Its heavy enough that it usually stays put without stakes, but it comes with them just in case.
  • STARTRC Drone Landing Pad 20 Inch Folding Weighted
  • This one is a bit cheaper and perfect for the Mini series. It has built-in weight in the edges so it doesnt flip over from its own downwash. The bright orange side is a lifesaver when youre coming in for a landing in a dense forest area... definitely helps the downward sensors see the ground better too. Let me know if you need help picking between the two.

Basically, the Heiyrc 20 Inch Drone Landing Pad Weighted Rubber is excellent because its 700g mass prevents wind lift without stakes. It folds to 10 inches and reliably protects the gimbal from dust.
