So I just got a DJI Mini 4 Pro for my birthday and I’ve been staring at it on my desk for three days because I’m literally terrified of breaking the little gimbal thing or snapping a wing off. Sorry if this is a really basic question but I have no idea how people actually travel with these things without them just getting crushed in a bag. I’m planning a trip to the Olympic Peninsula next month and it’s probably gonna be super rainy and muddy so I need something that actually keeps it safe but I’m totally lost looking at all these options.
My logic was that I should just get the official bag that came with it but it feels so flimsy like if I dropped it once it would be game over. Then I started looking at those hard shell cases with the foam inside but I don’t know if those are overkill for a beginner? Like is that just for professionals or something? I saw some on Amazon that are like $50 and then some others that are $200 and they look exactly the same to me so I'm super confused about what the difference is. Is it just the plastic quality?
I have maybe $120 max to spend on a case because I already spent way too much on the drone itself and some extra batteries. I really want something that can fit the controller too because I dont want that getting scratched up either. I was thinking maybe a hard case is better for the rain but then I have to carry it by a handle and that seems annoying if I'm hiking? But a backpack feels less safe. I dont know.
Are there specific brands that everyone uses? I keep seeing stuff like Nanuk or GPC but they look really expensive and I dont know if my tiny drone even needs all that. Should I just stick with a soft case and be careful or is that a recipe for disaster? I’m just so worried I’m gonna ruin this thing before I even get a good video...
Been thinking about your budget and that trip to the Olympic Peninsula. If you're gonna be in heavy rain, the $50 cases on Amazon aren't necessarily cheap in a bad way. They usually use a basic ABS plastic that's plenty tough for a Mini. The $200 ones like Nanuk are amazing but you're mostly paying for high-end latches and lifetime warranties which might be overkill right now. For your specific $120 limit, here are a couple practical ways to go:
Building on the earlier suggestion, hard cases are fine for storage but unfortunately a nightmare for hiking. I tried lugging a heavy shell through the mud once and it was just frustrating... not as good as I expected for long trails. The LowePro DroneGuard CS 150 Lightweight Case is a better bet. Its semi-rigid and fits into a waterproof pack easily. Carrying a plastic box by a handle for miles is just annoying tbh.
Unfortunately, the stock bag isnt as good as expected and feels cheap. I had issues with soft cases, so get a Lykus Titan MM410 Hard Case for DJI Mini 4 Pro instead.
