Does anyone know which external mic is actually the best for a Canon DSLR because Im getting such mixed reviews and I just bought a 90D and Im so pumped to start filming! I finally saved up enough to get the body and now I want to make sure the audio doesnt suck because everyone says internal mics on these things are basically garbage lol. I spent all night watching YouTube reviews and honestly my head is spinning.
I keep seeing the Rode VideoMic Pro+ everywhere and it looks cool but then I read some forums where people say the preamps in Canon cameras are super noisy so you have to turn the camera gain down and the mic gain up? That sounds really complicated and I just want something that works. Then I saw the Sennheiser MKE 400 and some guys say it sounds more natural but others say it picks up way too much wind noise even with the little deadcat thing on it.
I live in Chicago so it is always windy as heck and Im planning to take this setup on a trip to the Grand Canyon next month so I really need something that can handle a breeze without sounding like a hurricane is happening in the background. My budget is roughly $250 maybe $300 if it's really worth it but Id rather stay on the cheaper side if the difference isnt huge. I also saw some stuff about:
Im mostly gonna be doing like travel vlogging and maybe some sit down interviews for a project Im starting. Does the 90D handle certain brands better? I read somewhere that some mics have a weird plug that doesnt sit right in the jack and makes a buzzing sound which would be a nightmare. Should I be looking at a shotgun mic or one of those tiny ones that sits on top? Just want to get it ordered this week so I can practice before the trip...
I've been using the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro Shotgun Microphone for years now. It's affordable and that gain knob works perfectly with the 90D preamps. Honestly, I'm really happy with it.
Re: "TL;DR: Shure VP83 LensHopper Condenser Microphone is best...."
TL;DR: Shure VP83 LensHopper Condenser Microphone is best. Its +20dB gain stage lets you bypass the noisy 90D preamps, plus the Rycote mount is way more effective at dampening wind-induced vibrations...
^ This. Also, are you gonna be using a cage or just mounting everything directly to the hot shoe? I get so paranoid about the plastic mount snapping if the mic is too heavy or tall! But omg you are gonna have such an amazing time with the 90D, it is seriously a fantastic camera!! Since you mentioned the Grand Canyon, you absolutely have to stop by that retro diner in Seligman if you're taking Route 66. I went there a few years back and had the most amazing milkshake of my life, I think it was malted vanilla? The walls are covered in all this cool vintage memorabilia and the owner actually let me take some photos of his old film camera collection. I spent like two hours just chatting with him about how much the area has changed since the highway bypassed it. It's so quiet out there at night, it's almost eerie but in a really cool way. Anyway lol I totally went off track there, sorry about that!
