So Ive been shooting with my 5D Mark IV for like five years now and I usually stick to prime lenses and natural light because honestly flashes always scared me off a bit with all the math involved but I just booked this indoor engagement shoot for a friend in three weeks and the venue is basically a cave and there is no way my 85mm is gonna save me there without some extra light. I've been doing professional-ish work for a while now but I've always avoided the flash side of things unless it was absolutely necessary. I picked up a cheap Neewer flash a while back just to have in my bag but the recycle time is absolute trash when Im trying to catch candid moments and the colors just look... off? Kinda muddy and too cool and it makes the skin tones look like everyone is sick. I need something that handles TTL really well because I wont have time to fiddle with manual settings while the couple is moving around. I was looking at the Canon 600EX-RT II because obviously it's the brand name choice but man that price tag is steep for something I might not use every day... although maybe its worth it for the reliability so I dont look like an amateur when it fails to fire? On the other hand I keep seeing everyone rave about the Godox V1 with that round head for softer light but I'm worried about it talking to my Canon body correctly or if the hot shoe mount is gonna be flimsy because I heard some rumors about the pins not lining up right on some units. My budget is strictly under 450 bucks since I also had to buy a new battery grip recently so I'm looking for that sweet spot of performance vs cost. Is it better to go with the official Canon stuff even if its used or are these third party ones like the V1 or the V860III actually reliable enough for a paid gig now? I really need something that can bounce off high ceilings without losing its mind and overheating after twenty shots...
I've been using the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon for a while and honestly, I'm very satisfied. The TTL communication works well on the 5D, so you won't have to fiddle with settings during the shoot. The recycle time is incredibly fast thanks to the lithium battery, and I've had no complaints about overheating. It's a solid, professional choice that hits your budget perfectly.
Like someone mentioned, Godox is a solid choice. I'm really satisfied with my Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash for Canon and it works well for fast-paced gigs. No complaints about the shoe mount either, it's sturdy enough for pro work. Since your budgets tight, this saves you more than the V1 while keeping that lithium battery. It definitely wont overheat during portraits unless you're firing full power like a madman.
