Ive been shooting on Sony for years but I just grabbed the A7IV for a trip to Tokyo this November. I really want to stick with Tamron to save some weight on those long walking days.
I'm torn between the 28-75mm G2 and the 28-200mm superzoom. Usually Im an f2.8 guy but having that reach without swapping lenses sounds great. My budget is around $1000 so I could maybe swing a small prime too. Is the image quality on the 28-200 actually good enough for that 33MP sensor or am I gonna regret not having the constant aperture for night street shots?
Yo! Tokyo is incredible but you gotta be careful with your glass choice there. Honestly, since youre rocking the A7IV, that 33MP sensor is pretty demanding on optics. While the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is a total beast for convenience, the variable aperture is kinda a trap. It hits f/4.5 before you even get to 50mm. I would suggest sticking with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for those crisp night shots in Shinjuku. The G2 has much better corner-to-corner resolution data on high-megapixel bodies and the VXD motor is way faster. You might want to consider adding a used Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 as a tiny backup if you have room in the budget for those low-light street walks. TL;DR: Buy the 28-75mm G2. Constant f/2.8 is non-negotiable for Tokyos night life and the image quality holds up better on your 33MP sensor.
Just caught up with this thread. I have been very satisfied with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for my travel sets. It works well with the 33MP sensor and I have no complaints regarding the low light performance.
@Reply #1 - good point! Unfortunately, the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD lacked the resolution I expected. I found the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 much more reliable on my A7IV.
