Which external microphone works best with Sony mirrorless cameras?

Im losing my mind trying to pick a mic for my a7iv before my Japan trip next month. I spent hours looking at the Sony ECM-B10 since no cables sounds great but then half the reviews say the noise floor is trash and it sounds tinny. Then people swear by the Rode NTG but the cable literally blocks my flip out screen when I try to film and it is so annoying. I just want something that works without a huge headache.

Here is what I need:

  • under 250 bucks
  • wont block the side screen
  • good for wind since I will be outside a lot
  • small enough to pack in a bag

Does the Sony one actually suck or is there something else I am missing?

@Reply #1 - good point about the shoe! If you are worried about the noise floor on those tiny shotguns though, you might want to consider a wireless setup instead. I have used the Sony ECM-W2BT Wireless Microphone on my a7iv for a while and it is great because it sends audio directly through the MI shoe. No wires mean your screen is totally clear. Be careful with the settings to get the best out of it:

  • Flip the switch to Digital for the cleanest signal on your camera
  • Use the 10dB attenuator if you are in loud places like Shinjuku
  • Keep the fuzzy windscreen on at all times outdoors It is small enough to pack anywhere and stays well under your 250 dollar budget. Just make sure to monitor your levels in crowded areas... sometimes the signal can jump if there is a ton of interference, but usually it is solid. If you need more help with the settings before you fly out, just ask.

Seriously, grab the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone! It uses the digital shoe so zero cables block your screen, plus the 14.6mm capsule tech sounds amazing for its tiny size!

> I just want something that works without a huge headache. Honestly, I felt the same until switching to a wireless setup. Its been a total game changer for my workflow and I'm super satisfied with the lack of clutter. I found that going digital really helped. Are you trying to capture the whole environment or just your voice? Also, does the receiver size on top bother you?
