I'm trying to pick a cheap flash for my a6400 before a wedding next month.
My logic was the Godox TT350S since it's small, so I was thinking that's perfect, but then I read the TT685S is way better for power. I only have $100 so I'm stuck choosing between size or actual performance...
Re: "Look, i really wish i could tell you..." - basically, everyone is saying small flashes fail when things get heated. i unfortunately learned that the hard way; my cheap unit just wouldnt recycle fast enough during the ceremony. honestly, look for a used Godox V860III-S TTL Li-ion Flash. if thats too much, the Neewer NW655-S TTL Flash for Sony is a solid budget alternative with way more kick.
Look, i really wish i could tell you the small flash works, but unfortunately the Godox TT350S Sony Speedlite is just gonna let you down at a wedding. I had issues with mine overheating after only 15 minutes of shooting. Its basically a toy compared to the full-size units. If you're planning on bouncing light off a ceiling—which you definitely need to do for decent shots—the Guide Number of 36 on that thing isnt gonna cut it. Youll be pushing your ISO way too high just to compensate for the lack of output. The Godox TT685S Sony Speedlight is really the bare minimum for event work. It uses 4 AA batteries instead of 2, and that matters way more than people realize. Recycle times are everything when things are moving fast. If you miss the kiss because your flash was still charging, you're toast. Its not as good as expected to try and save weight or size here. If you're absolutely stuck at $100, you might look at the Godox TT600S Manual Flash for the power, but doing a wedding without TTL is a nightmare. Honestly, just save up another twenty bucks and get the Godox TT685IIS Sony Speedlite. Dont compromise on the power or youll regret it the second you walk into a dark reception hall.
honestly, i went through this exact same struggle when i started shooting events. the idea of a tiny flash was tempting since it looked less intimidating, but man, experience taught me a hard lesson at a reception. small units just dont have the thermal management for a wedding environment. while shooting a dance floor, my gear just shut down because it got too hot... super stressful moment tbh. switching to the more powerful version made a world of difference and i've been totally satisfied since. it works well even when firing off shots quickly tho. my main caution is that small units recycle way too slow when batteries get low, which is a huge safety risk for your reputation if you miss the kiss. having extra power is a lifesaver for bouncing light off high ceilings. no complaints since making the switch to the bigger one.
