What is the absolute best Sigma lens I can get for portrait photography on my Sony A7IV?

Im honestly so fed up with my Sony 85mm f1.8, the chromatic aberration is driving me absolutely insane and the autofocus keeps hunting in low light during my golden hour shoots. I ended up ruining half the shots from a couple portrait session last weekend here in chilly Chicago because of it and Im just ready to sell this thing and switch to Sigma.

My budget is around 1000 bucks, maybe slightly more if its really worth it, and I need to get this sorted before my next big outdoor shoot in three weeks. Ive heard amazing things about the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art but then some people say the 50mm f1.4 is more versatile. I mostly do outdoor lifestyle portraits and headshots. Is the 85mm Art really as sharp as everyone says or is it too heavy to carry around all day? I just need something reliable that actually locks focus and doesnt give me those awful green and purple fringes on every backlit photo.

Which one should I go for...

Honestly, you should skip the 50mm. I had issues with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E during backlit testing. The longitudinal chromatic aberration is actually not as good as expected for a modern Art lens, and you will still end up cleaning up purple fringing in Lightroom. For your specific issue with CA and AF hunting, the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E is the only logical choice here. I tested it extensively on the A7IV. Here is what you need to keep in mind:

  • Optical correction: The 85mm DG DN uses five Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements. It completely eliminates the axial CA that is ruining your backlit shots on the Sony f1.8.
  • Autofocus: It utilizes a stepping motor that is optimized for Sony phase-detection AF. It does not hunt in low light like the older HSM versions did.
  • Weight: At 630g, it is not too heavy. Sigma redesigned this specifically for mirrorless, making it about 55 percent lighter than the old DSLR version. Unfortunately, the Sony f1.8 is known for terrible double-line bokeh and heavy fringing. The Sigma 85mm Art fixes all of this. Just make sure you get the DG DN version, not the older DG HSM which is a heavy brick and has slower autofocus.
