Okay so I am about to lose my mind with this Sigma fp. I love the image quality and that tiny form factor is great for what I do but the screen on the back is actually killing me. I am doing this documentary shoot out in the high desert near Joshua Tree in like three weeks and I literally cannot see a single thing on the display if there is even a hint of sun. Its just a glossy mirror at this point and I cant even tell if my focus is sharp or not. Plus the fact that it doesnt tilt is such a massive pain for low angle shots and my neck is starting to hate me.
I have been scouring forums and watching way too many YouTube reviews and I am stuck between three options but honestly I just need someone who has actually used these with a Sigma to tell me what wont break or lag. I was looking at the Atomos Ninja V because everyone says its the gold standard but it feels bulky and I dont really need the external recording right now since I usually just shoot to SSD anyway. Then there is the Portkeys LH5P II which looks cool because it can actually control the camera settings through the cable but I heard the software is buggy as hell and I dont want it crashing mid-shoot. My third choice was the Blackmagic Video Assist 5 inch 12G because I heard it plays nice with the raw output if I ever decide to go that route but its getting pricey and might push me over my $600 budget once I buy batteries and those stupidly expensive micro-HDMI cables.
I am mostly worried about the micro-HDMI port on the Sigma being super fragile so I need something that wont put too much strain on it or has a good cage setup that actually fits. I just need something bright enough to see in the desert sun without a massive hood if possible because the wind out there is no joke. Also I am on a tight timeline so I need to order this like yesterday so it gets to me here in LA before I head out. Which of these is actually going to work best without making me regret my life choices? Is the Portkeys camera control actually worth the headache or should I just stick to a standard monitor that just works?
Ngl the Sigma fp image is amazing but that screen is a nightmare in the sun! You absolutely need the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200nit Touchscreen Monitor for that desert shoot since 2200 nits is a total lifesaver. Please dont skip the SmallRig Camera Cage for Sigma fp series 2271 to protect that fragile micro-HDMI port... it is so crucial for reliability! You are gonna love it!
Totally agree! That Portkeys is amazing for brightness! To save that fragile port, you definitely need a dedicated clamp. I love the SmallRig HDMI Cable Clamp for Sigma fp 1679 because it keeps things locked down! For the sun, the FeelWorld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit Ultra Bright Monitor is also fantastic.
