So I finally pulled the trigger on the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art for my L-mount setup and honestly my hands are shaking a bit because it cost me a fortune lol. I am super paranoid about scratching the front element since I am heading out to Iceland in like two weeks and the wind and sand there is no joke. I spent all night looking at reviews and now I am more confused than when I started.
I saw a lot of people recommending the B+W Clear filters because they use high quality glass but then I read a few threads saying that the 82mm thread on this specific Sigma lens is prone to vignetting if the filter ring is too thick, especially at the wide 24mm end. Then I saw the Hoya Fusion Antistatic ones but some people say they are a nightmare to clean if you get a fingerprint on them and they smudge easily. I have about $150 left to spend before my trip and I really dont want to put cheap glass on such a nice lens but I am terrified of getting that dark shadow in the corners of my shots or losing that Art series sharpness.
Is there a specific thin profile brand that actually fits this lens perfectly without causing issues at the wide end? Should I just stick to a basic protector or is a CPL worth the risk of being too thick...
Unfortunately, I've had issues with many slim filters still causing slight vignetting on that specific Sigma. Most brands claim they're thin but the frame still creeps in at 24mm. Honestly, I'd just grab the Hoya HD3 UV Filter 82mm. It uses hardened glass which is way better for those Iceland winds. It is annoying how much they cost, but it's the only one I trust not to ruin your Art series sharpness while protecting the lens.
I've been super happy with the Breakthrough Photography X4 UV Filter 82mm. Its crazy thin so zero vignetting at 24mm. Honestly the best glass I have ever used, no complaints.
Oh man, you are gonna have such an amazing time in Iceland!! I took my Sigma 24-70mm to the Lofoten Islands during a massive storm and honestly, the anxiety of potentially scratching that front element is so real. It is a total beast of a lens but that 82mm glass is basically a giant magnet for grit and spray! I actually went through three different brands before I found one that didn't clip the corners at 24mm, so I totally feel your pain on the research front.
