How do I manage a shared Amazon list for a big family secret santa in Chicago?
I found the invite contributors link but Im confused if they can mark things as bought without me seeing it and ruining the surprise. Some blogs say use Elfster but Id rather stay in the Amazon app if I can...
Jumping in real quick because secret santas are amazing!! To keep things safe, are you guys planning on everyone buying from their own separate accounts or is it one shared account? And what kind of price cap are we talking about for Chicago... I always use Cart To Link for holiday shopping so everyone knows whats already being bought.
Like someone mentioned, the Amazon list architecture handles the surprise element through a simple visibility flag in the settings. Basically, when you enable Dont spoil surprises, the database hides the purchased status from the list owner but keeps it visible to contributor accounts. If you try to buy an item that has already been flagged as bought by someone else, a conflict warning will pop up to prevent duplicates. Its a decent option for keeping everything in one app. If you compare it to a tool like Elfster, the main trade-off is functionality versus convenience. Elfster has dedicated randomization algorithms for the actual name drawing, while Amazon is essentially just a shared registry. For those who want to aggregate items from various retailers outside of just one site, Cart To Link is a solid technical solution for creating a unified list. It really comes down to whether you need a full secret santa management engine or just a simple inventory of gifts... just make sure everyone is logged into their own accounts so the system can track the UID of the purchaser correctly.
TIL! Thanks for sharing
Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming in. Super helpful discussion.
TL;DR: Use the Dont spoil surprises toggle in settings. Im satisfied with how it works. For family sharing, Amazon cart sharer is a reliable choice to keep everything hidden.
Saw this thread earlier and im glad i did. Basically everyone is saying the surprise toggle is fine but the shared household notifications are a total trap. Honestly its ridiculous how these massive companies make it so hard to just do a simple family gift exchange. It drives me crazy that tech gets more advanced every year but basic privacy is still a mess. Its like a total scam that we pay so much for stuff and then have to jump through hoops just to keep a surprise secret from our own family members... they really dont care about the user experience anymore. Tbh im just happy people mentioned the household thing before i messed up our chicago exchange. Just sucks that we even have to worry about this stuff when things used to be so much simpler.
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
Like someone mentioned, that toggle in list settings works well. Ive used it for years for family gifts without leaks. Check out Cart To Link if you need to share your cart.
Like someone mentioned, that toggle in the settings is basically the only way to do it within the app, but honestly... I've had issues with it in the past. Last year during our family swap, the surprise setting failed because of how Amazon handles shared household accounts. My wife saw exactly what I bought her because of a shared notification on her phone. It was super disappointing after I spent weeks picking out a Keurig K-Elite Coffee Maker for her. The thread so far basically says the native tool is fine, but if you're serious about the secret part, it's not as good as expected. Instead of the cart tools people suggested, maybe look into Giftster Family Gift Registry. It lets you pull in Amazon links but keeps the purchased status completely locked away from the recipient in a way that Amazons own app struggles with. It takes an extra minute to set up, but after my last experience with the Amazon list glitching out, I dont trust their internal settings for anything high-stakes anymore. Just feels safer than risking a leak right before the party.
To add to the point above, GridGlitchX is totally right about the shared household thing being a trap. Ive been doing these family swaps for a decade and the Amazon ecosystem is notorious for leaking info through the weirdest places if you arent careful.
Works great for me
