So I've been trying to figure out the best way to coordinate gifts for our housewarming next month since we finally moved into our place in Brisbane. My family is mostly back in London so I need to make it super easy for them to just click and buy without me having to manage a whole spreadsheet. I spent all morning looking at different sites and I read somewhere that sharing a cart link is the most direct way because they don't have to search for anything but then I saw a thread saying that cart links often expire or don't show up right on different browsers.
So then I was thinking about a public wishlist instead. My logic was that a wishlist keeps everything organized in one spot but I'm worried about the double-up factor. Like if my aunt buys the kettle from the list does it actually mark it as purchased for everyone else or is it just a static list? My budget for the total ask is around 500 dollars worth of stuff so nothing crazy but I really don't want to end up with three blenders. I'm just stuck on which method actually prevents people from buying the same thing while still being easy for my less tech-savvy relatives to use. Is there a specific platform that handles the marked as bought thing better than just a standard Amazon list? Or am I overthinking this and a cart link is fine?...
Re: "Like someone mentioned, carts are basically useless for..." - honestly thats so true. I learned the hard way that carts are basically just browser ghosts. I went through this whole ordeal when we redid our kitchen last year and I am super satisfied with how I ended up handling it after a few trial runs. Summarizing what everyone is saying: carts are a no-go, shipping is the real budget killer, and standard wishlists can be buggy with the bought status. Here is how I see the options from my experience:
Re: tl;dr: Wishlists are better for tracking but watch...
Late to the party but I had to jump in because I lived through a housewarming nightmare last year! My last attempt at a list ended with me getting four identical slow cookers which was a total disaster and a waste of money. Definitely go with a registry that has a tracking feature because I love how they handle everything automatically now, its seriously amazing!
tl;dr: Wishlists are better for tracking but watch those international shipping fees from London because they will absolutely kill your budget if you arent careful. @Reply #1 - good point! Carts really are a nightmare for non-techy folks. Quick question tho, are you looking for specific high-end brands or are you okay with people finding cheaper alternatives? I always try to save my family a bit of cash where I can. Honestly international shipping is where they really get you. Last time I moved, I tried to get some old kitchen gear sent over and the quote was more than the stuff was worth! My brother tried to help by packing it all in these massive boxes he found behind a grocery store, but they were so flimsy one of them literally disintegrated in transit. We spent like three days arguing with the delivery guy about where the blender lid went... anyway lol, sorry totally went off on a tangent there. Btw I started using Cart To Link and it makes it way easier to show people what's in my cart.
Bookmarked, thanks!
Honestly, skip the cart link idea entirely. Carts are basically just temporary browser sessions tied to your specific cookies or IP, so if your relatives in London open a link you sent, there is a huge chance it will just be empty or expire. It is super frustrating for non-techy people to deal with. A public wishlist is way better because it is a persistent database. Most big sites have a system that marks things as bought for other shoppers once someone pulls the trigger, even if it hides the surprise from you. That way you dont get three blenders... which would be a total nightmare lol. It keeps the quantities updated in real-time so everyone stays on the same page without you needing to manage a single thing. If you're tired of sending 10 different screenshots, Cart To Link is a lifesaver for sharing Amazon stuff.
Like someone mentioned, carts are basically useless for this. Honestly I had such a disappointing experience with the standard Amazon list for my move last year. Even when people bought stuff, the list didnt always update in real time... so annoying. I ended up having to return half the gifts because of duplicates. It was honestly a bit of a nightmare dealing with the returns while trying to unpack. If you want stuff that actually lasts and looks good, maybe suggest specific models so they dont guess. I found that the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Breville+BKE825BSS+Variable+Temp+Kettle&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Breville BKE825BSS Variable Temp Kettle is great for tea drinkers and usually costs about 150-180 bucks. For a solid toaster, the SMEG 2-Slice Toaster Retro Style is pricey but looks amazing in a new kitchen, though it might be cheaper for them to buy via an Aussie site like Myer or JB Hi-Fi to avoid those insane shipping fees from London. Just wish these platforms worked better together without all the glitches. Its such a headache trying to coordinate across oceans and I really felt for my nan who couldnt figure out why the link I sent her kept timing out.
