So I finally picked up a GH6 for a series of short docs I'm filming around the PNW next month and man this thing is a beast but it's also a total power hog. I've got about $400 left in my budget for essentials and I'm really hitting a wall on what to prioritize first.

I'm stuck between two different ways to rig this thing up. Option A is just buying a bunch of extra DMW-BLK22 batteries and a fast 128gb CFexpress Type B card. It keeps the kit small and light which is great for hiking but those cards are so pricey for the amount of footage I'll be shooting. Option B is getting a cage and mounting a Samsung T7 SSD plus a V-mount battery plate. It seems way more cost effective for long shoot days but I'm worried about the weight and the weather sealing since it's always drizzling here and I dont want cables getting wet.

The SSD route feels like a smarter investment but is it gonna be a nightmare to handle on a gimbal or just handheld in general? Or should I just bite the bullet on the expensive cards and swap batteries every 45 minutes... what would you guys do if you were trying to keep the build relatively portable but still functional for a whole day in the field?

Ngl the SSD route is an amazing game changer for the GH6! I love it because it saves so much cash compared to those insane CFexpress cards. Definitely grab the SmallRig GH6 Camera Cage 3784 and a Samsung T7 Shield 1TB Portable SSD for that weather resistance since youre in the PNW. Its fantastic and handles way better than youd think! Youll definitely stay under budget and still shoot all day!

In my experience, external cables are the first thing to fail when things get damp. I tried an SSD rig once on a rainy shoot and the connection was just way too finicky... definitely not worth the risk. For doc work, Id suggest sticking to a Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B Gold Series 128GB and extra Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Batteries. Keeping everything internal ensures the weather sealing actually works and the camera stays safe.

I've tried many storage setups, and in my experience, sustained write speeds are everything for the GH6. I've found the Angelbird AV PRO CFexpress B 512GB handles the heat way better than most. For power, I'd honestly just grab a few Wasabi Power DMW-BLK22 2-Pack sets. It keeps the setup weather-sealed and way more nimble for hiking tho, and you wont have wires snagging on every branch.
