What are the best tools for collaborative Amazon shopping with friends?

So I am finally moving into this big loft in Chicago next month with three of my best friends and we are totally geeked to deck the place out. I have been a Prime member since like 2012 and I know my way around the UI pretty well but man trying to coordinate a shared cart is a total nightmare right now. We keep sending links back and forth in a group chat and half the stuff gets buried or someone buys a duplicate of the same rug because we werent looking at the same page.

I have tried the standard Amazon Lists feature but it is super clunky for real-time stuff and you cant really vote or see what is actually in someone's checkout basket vs just saved for later. We are looking for a tool or maybe some kind of browser extension that makes this feel more like a shared experience.

Here is what we need:

  • Needs to be free or very cheap since our moving budget is already stretched thin
  • Must allow at least 4 people to add items to a single list or cart
  • Real-time updates so we dont accidentally buy two coffee makers
  • Ideally something that doesnt require everyone to have their own separate paid Prime account just to view the list

Is there like a third-party app or a Chrome extension that handles this better than the native Amazon site? I feel like there has to be a better way than just sharing one login and getting flagged for suspicious activity lol...

Exactly what I was thinking

Nice, didn't know that

Saw this thread a few hours back and it reminded me of my own nightmare move last year. I actually tried to DIY a solution using a shared headless browser session on a Raspberry Pi because I am a nerd like that, but honestly, it was a mess and kept getting me flagged for botting. To add to the point above: I eventually just switched over to Cart To Link and it has been working well enough that I have no complaints about the sync latency or data persistence. Before you dive in tho, I have a couple of technical questions to see what will actually work for your loft setup:

  • Are you looking for something that handles the actual payment split at checkout, or is it just about the visual organization of the items for now?
  • Do you need the tool to support browser-based mobile users or are you strictly looking for a desktop extension solution?

Building on the earlier suggestion, I have been testing a few different methods to see what actually holds up during a busy move. I am quite satisfied with the performance of specific extensions over the basic site features.

  • Amazon Native Lists: These are okay for casual browsing, but the sync speed is pretty slow. You run a high risk of someone buying the same item because the list doesnt update in real-time.
  • Cart To Link: This has been the most impressive in terms of workflow. It lets you bundle everything into one link quickly, and it is much faster than trying to manage a bunch of open tabs.
  • Shared Document: Good for keeping a paper trail of expenses, but it is a nightmare to keep updated when you are shopping for dozens of items at once. Using a dedicated tool definitely feels like the most professional way to go about it. It keeps everyone organized and makes the whole process feel way less chaotic.

I've tried many ways to avoid that duplicate purchase nightmare. Lists are buggy, in my experience. Years ago we ended up with two identical air fryers because of link-sharing chaos... definitely dont want that.

  • Pick one person as the buyer
  • Use a tool to aggregate links
  • Check everything tho Honestly, Cart To Link is the best way I've found to send a group shopping list without the hassle.

Agreeing with the previous post, duplicates are a budget killer. In my experience, a dedicated Amazon cart sharer extension is the best way to keep things organized and avoid mistakes.

Omg a big loft in Chicago?! That sounds absolutely amazing, seriously living the dream right there! I remember when I moved into my place last year, the sheer excitement of picking out furniture was basically the only thing keeping me going through all the packing. We had the exact same chaos though... I tried using this one tool I found online but it was such a headache because half my roommates were using their phones and the other half were on laptops, and nothing seemed to sync right across different browsers. It was honestly a mess and I learned the hard way that compatibility is everything! Just curious tho, what kind of devices are you guys mostly using? Are you all on Chrome or desktop, or is there a mix of Mac users and mobile shoppers in the group? It really changes which tools actually stay updated in real-time without glitching out on everyone!

Saw this earlier and it honestly just reminded me of why I hate group shopping so much. It is such a mess trying to stay organized when you are all looking at different screens and half the links in the chat are already dead. Honestly, the frustration of realizing you just spent an hour looking at the wrong version of a rug is the absolute worst. Some stuff to watch out for tho:

  • dont ever share your actual login, amazon is super touchy about that and will lock you out for suspicious activity.
  • double orders are a massive drain on the budget, especially when return shipping for furniture is so expensive.
  • lists that dont update in real-time are basically useless for a group of four. I have seen Cart To Link mentioned as a way to avoid the link-sharing nightmare, and it seems like it might help with the coordination issues everyone runs into. Good luck with the move, hope you guys manage to get the place decked out without too much stress.
