What are the actual, verified SD or CFexpress cards you guys are using for 4K on the GH6 because I am losing my mind over here. I'm honestly so frustrated with this camera right now, I've already spent nearly $300 on cards that supposedly met the specs but they keep failing on me. I bought these V60 cards because some guy on YouTube said they'd be fine for standard 10-bit 4K but the camera keeps throwing recording stopped errors every few minutes and it's making it impossible to work. I'm shooting a three-day wedding event in Seattle next month and I absolutely cannot have the buffer dying in the middle of the ceremony. I know CFexpress Type B is what everyone recommends for the heavy ProRes stuff but even my V90 SD cards are being finicky lately and I'm starting to think my unit is cursed or something. I'm looking at the ProGrade Cobalt or maybe the Lexar Gold series but I really don't want to blow another few hundred bucks on gear that isn't 100% stable. Does anyone have a specific brand or model that actually works for 4K 60p without crashing? I need 256GB or 512GB capacities because I'm doing a lot of long-form b-roll and I'm just tired of the guesswork...

Look, I totally get the frustration... the GH6 is notoriously picky because of those high bitrate 10-bit files. Honestly, if you are doing weddings, you gotta stop messing with SD cards for the primary slot. SD cards just dont have the sustained write speeds needed for long-form b-roll. In my experience, most V60 cards dip below their rated speed way too fast when they get warm. Since you are trying to save some cash, skip the ProGrade Cobalt price tag and look at the Angelbird AV Pro SE CFexpress Type B 512GB. Its probably the best value card out there and it actually maintains the sustained write speed you need for 4K. If you really want an SD card backup, the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II 256GB V90 is the only one I trust. I have used these for ages and they stay solid even when the camera gets hot.

I saw this just now and honestly, you might want to be careful with SD cards for those long wedding sets. They overheat way too easily. For a budget-friendly but stable move, I would suggest the Angelbird AV PRO CFexpress B SE 512GB. It handles 4K 60p easily and costs way less than the ProGrade stuff. Just make sure to format in-camera before every single shoot.

To add to the point above: Unfortunately, the marketing on these cards is a bit misleading for high-bitrate shooters. The V60 and V90 ratings refer to minimum sustained speeds, but cameras like the GH6 push those cards to their absolute thermal limits. I have had issues with Lexar cards in the past where they just couldnt handle the heat of a 4K 60p workflow for more than twenty minutes. It is honestly quite frustrating. You really need to look at cards with a high minimum sustained write speed rather than just the V-rating or the peak megabytes per second. For a high-stakes wedding in Seattle, you need total reliability. I have found that cheaping out on storage is the fastest way to ruin a shoot, tbh.

  • ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Cobalt 325GB
  • This is probably the safest bet because of the SLC memory. It doesnt throttle when it gets hot.
  • Delkin Devices 512GB Black CFexpress Type B
  • These are built for torture and have a great replacement warranty if they ever fail.
  • Sony TOUGH CFexpress Type B 512GB
  • Very stable, though quite pricey. I would politely disagree with relying on V90 SD cards as a primary for the GH6. The architecture of the camera clearly favors the CFexpress slot for stability. Even the best SD cards like the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC V90 256GB can be finicky during long-form recording because of the way they manage heat. Its better to just commit to the more expensive media now than to explain to a bride why the ceremony footage is missing... trust me on that one, ngl.
