So I just bit the bullet and bought the Fujifilm X-T5 and oh my god it is so pretty but also so scary looking with all those knobs and dials. I've literally only ever used my iPhone 14 for photos so jumping into this feels like I'm trying to fly a spaceship or something. I'm actually heading to Japan in about three weeks for a dream trip and I really want to take amazing photos but I'm realizing the box only comes with like... the camera and a battery. I spent most of my savings on the body and a 18-55mm lens so I have maybe $250 or $300 left to spend on stuff to make sure I dont mess this up.
I'm so confused about what is actually necessary and what is just extra fluff that influencers try to sell you. Like do I need a screen protector? I'm so worried about scratching that little screen while I'm traveling. And what about SD cards? I looked online and there are so many numbers and letters like V30 and V60 and UHS-II and I have no clue if the cheap one from my old point and shoot will even work or if it will make the camera lag or something haha. Also the battery life... should I buy more? I've heard mirrorless cameras die fast and I'll be walking around Tokyo all day so I dont want to be stuck with a dead brick halfway through the afternoon.
Someone mentioned a thumb grip and a soft release shutter button but those just look like decorations? Do they actually help you take better pictures or are they just for aesthetics? I just want to make sure I have everything I need before I get on that plane because I dont want to be in a foreign country and realize I forgot something basic. I'm sorry if these are really dumb questions I'm just super excited and also lowkey terrified of breaking this expensive piece of gear. What are the absolute must-have things I should buy right now with my remaining budget?
Honestly youre fine. I've been super satisfied with SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I V30 for my X-T5 because it works well and is cheap. Dont overthink the V60 or V90 stuff unless you're doing heavy video. Also, definitely grab an extra Fujifilm NP-W235 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery because Tokyo is a lot of walking. Those two are the only real essentials you actually need right now, everything else is fluff tho.
Totally agree about the battery. I would suggest being extra cautious with the screen in busy crowds tho, so maybe grab an Expert Shield Glass Screen Protector for Fujifilm X-T5. Make sure to also look at the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap SLL-BK-3 because the original strap is kinda thin. Better to be safe than sorry with your new gear.
Congrats on the X-T5!! Youre gonna have such an amazing time in Japan! Like someone mentioned, those dials look scary but theyre honestly super fun once you get the hang of them. To help you spend that $300 wisely tho...
