I am so stressed right now because I leave for my hiking trip to the Pacific Northwest in literally six days and my current storage setup is a complete disaster. I bought this generic hard case off Amazon a few months ago for my Mavic and the latch just snapped off this morning while I was test packing my gear. Like, it literally just crumbled in my hand. I dont even know how that happens honestly. I paid about thirty bucks for it back then so I guess you get what you pay for but man it is so frustrating because now I have zero protection for a drone that cost me a fortune.
I looked at the official DJI carrying bags and some of the high end brands like GPC or Nanuk but they are just so wildly expensive. I really cant justify spending 150 dollars on a plastic box right now after paying for flights and rentals and everything else. My budget is strictly under 50 dollars because I still need to buy some ND filters before I go too. I am honestly fed up with these cheap knockoffs that use brittle plastic but I also dont want to carry my drone around in a grocery bag or something lol.
I need something that can actually handle being shoved into a heavy hiking backpack without the propellers getting crushed or the gimbal snapping off. Does anyone know a reliable brand that doesnt charge a massive drone tax just for the name? I need it to fit:
If I cant find something by Friday I might just have to wrap it in a bunch of thick t-shirts and hope for the best which makes me so incredibly nervous just thinking about it because if it breaks on the first trail im gonna be devastated. Are there any specific soft cases or maybe those semi-rigid ones that you guys use for day hikes? I just want something that wont fall apart the second I actually use it out in the field...
Adding my two cents... honestly you should be really careful with those cheap generic hard boxes because the hinge pins are usually garbage. Since you are on a tight budget, I would suggest looking at the Smatree N500 Semi-Rigid Case for DJI Mavic 3/Air 2S or something similar. I have analyzed the foam density on these and the high-density EVA is actually decent for the price point. Just make sure to check that the interior cutouts are snug because some of these cheaper ones have loose tolerances. You really dont want the drone sliding around inside while you're scrambling up a trail. I would also suggest grabbing a STARTRC Propeller Holder for DJI Mavic just to keep the blades locked down before you put it in the case... it is basically a five dollar insurance policy. Just be careful with the zipper pulls on these budget cases tho, they can be a bit flimsy if you overstuff the top mesh pocket. Let me know if you need specific dimensions for your controller type.
Tbh, I have been through exactly what you are dealing with and it is honestly such a letdown when gear fails right before a trip. I used to trust those generic hardshells but unfortunately, I have had issues with the hinge pins snapping at the worst possible times. Those cases are just not as good as expected for the price. For serious hiking, you really want something that separates the components properly. Zippered semi-rigid shells are usually the way to go because they compress slightly in your pack without crushing the internal foam or the gimbal. I once tried the shirt wrap method with an old drone and it was a disaster... the pressure from my water bottles and extra layers actually bent a propeller arm because there was zero structural support. It was a really expensive lesson. When you are looking for a replacement under fifty bucks, focus on these things:
I totally get the stress! I use these semi-rigid zippered cases that tuck right into my backpack and they are amazing for hiking! They save so much space compared to those bulky boxes. Just be super careful tho:
