What tripod is actually strong enough to hold a big heavy Canon DSLR without it tipping over? I am totally freaking out because I just bought a Canon 5D and this massive 70-200mm lens for my sisters wedding this Saturday and the cheap plastic tripod I had from my old point and shoot just basically snapped and almost broke everything. I have no idea what I am doing and I am such a newbie at this stuff so sorry if this is a stupid question but I really dont want to break two thousand dollars worth of gear.

I went to look online and there are like a million choices and I dont even know what a ball head is or why some cost fifty dollars and others cost five hundred. I live in a small town so I have to order something on amazon prime like today to get it here in time. My budget is maybe like 200 or 300 dollars if that is even enough to get something that wont fall over when I tilt the camera? I keep seeing stuff about carbon fiber and aluminum but is one better for heavy stuff? I just need it to be sturdy and not move at all while I am taking photos of the ceremony from the back of the church... help.

Honestly, i have seen way too many people trust cheap plastic legs with a kit like that and it almost always ends in a disaster. You are dealing with significant weight... probably 5 to 6 pounds total with the 5D and the 70-200mm. For a wedding ceremony where you are shooting from the back of a church, you need something that wont vibrate when people walk by or when you adjust your framing. I would suggest sticking with aluminum for now. Carbon fiber is lighter for hiking, but aluminum is actually more stable for heavy setups within your 300 dollar budget. You need to make sure the load rating is at least double your gear weight to avoid lens creep... that is when the ball head slowly sags after you think you locked it in place.

  • Manfrotto MT055XPRO3 Aluminum 3-Section Tripod paired with the Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO Ball Head. This setup is an industry staple. It has a 19.8 lb safety payload. It is very rigid, which is exactly what you need for that heavy glass. It might push the top of your budget but it is basically bulletproof.
  • Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263AB100 Aluminum Tripod Kit. This includes the Vanguard Alta BH-100 Ball Head. It is a bit more budget-friendly and is rated for about 15 lbs. The leg locks are very secure, which is vital for heavy gear. Be careful with the ball head tension though. Always keep one hand on your camera body while loosening the knobs. If you dont, that heavy lens will cause the head to flop over instantly and potentially hit the tripod legs. It is a lot of mass to manage... definitely practice before Saturday.

Stumbled upon this today and figured id weigh in. Quick question tho, are you gonna be moving around much or just staying stationary at the back? If weight isnt a huge deal, Benro Mach3 Aluminum Tripod with B2 Ball Head TMA28AB2 is solid as a rock. im super satisfied with mine for heavy setups. TL;DR: Stick with aluminum to get way better stability within your budget than carbon fiber.
