I really need some help like right now because I have a wedding this Saturday in Seattle and the venue just sent me photos and its basically a dark basement. Im shooting with a Canon R6 Mark II and I realized my old gear just isnt gonna cut it for this kind of low light setup since I usually stick to natural light but that is not an option here. Ive been looking online for a good external flash that wont break the bank but also wont fail on me during the first dance. I saw the Canon EL-1 is like the gold standard but honestly I cant justify spending a thousand bucks right now when I only have like 400 left in my budget for this month. Then I saw a lot of people talking about the Godox V1 being amazing for mirrorless but then I read some horror stories on reddit about the hot shoe pins not lining up right with the newer Canon mirrorless bodies and causing it to just stop firing randomly or even getting stuck. That literally cannot happen this weekend or Im dead. Is there something in between those two that actually works reliably with the R-series autofocus assist? Or is the Godox thing just people being dramatic and it actually works fine for professional use? I need something that recharges fast because these people are gonna be moving quick. Which external flash is actually the most reliable for these new mirrorless bodies without costing a literal mortgage payment?
Just saw this thread and man, I feel that stress. I've been shooting weddings for over a decade and honestly, the shift to mirrorless was a bit of a headache for lighting. I remember trying to save a buck a few years ago with some off-brand gear and it literally died during the processional. Total nightmare. Unfortunately, those stories about the hot shoe pins arent just people being dramatic... the new multi-function shoe on those bodies is super sensitive. I had issues with my older units not communicating right, which is the last thing you want in a dark basement. It’s not as good as expected when you’re paying for a pro body. Tbh, if you want peace of mind, just go with a genuine Canon Speedlite. Even if you have to find a used one to fit that budget, you really cant go wrong with the first-party stuff for reliability. I eventually gave up on the cheaper alternatives because I couldnt sleep the night before a big gig wondering if the shoe would communicate properly. If you do go the other route, just get any pro-level Godox Flash for Canon but make sure it’s the latest version. Just stick to those two brands and youll be okay, but for a high-stakes wedding? Id say go with whatever official Canon Speedlite Flash you can find. It’s worth the extra search to find a deal so you dont have to worry... you got this though!
Building on the earlier suggestion, that multi-function shoe on the R6 Mark II is definitely a different beast compared to the old style. Ive spent years tinkering with various setups and honestly, mirrorless bodies just dont handle third-party pins the same way my DSLRs did. I remember one gig where my sync timing just drifted halfway through the night and I ended up with a bunch of black frames... definitely not what you want in a basement wedding. Before you pull the trigger on anything tho, are you planning to mostly bounce your light off the low ceiling or are you gonna be using some kind of on-flash modifier? Also, is the AF-assist beam a dealbreaker for you? The R6 II has insane low-light tracking on its own, but some people still swear by that red grid for peace of mind when it is pitch black.
