I'm trying to kit out my two R5s for some wedding work starting next month in Chicago and I'm honestly torn. My logic was to just buy a pair of Canon 600EX II-RTs because they're 'official' but the price tag is kinda killing me. I read a bunch of threads saying the Godox V1 is the way to go because of the round head and light falloff, but then other people say the radio connection on the Canon stuff is way more stable in crowded rooms. So I'm just stuck between the reliable expensive option and the feature-rich cheaper one... is the Canon really that much better for actual pro reliability or am I just paying for the brand name?

Wait, quick question first... are you doing a lot of off-camera work or just on-camera? Honestly, if you want a pro setup without the Canon tax, the Westcott FJ80 II Universal Speedlight Flash is fantastic! I love it because the menu system is way easier and it feels super rugged. You can get two of those for way less than one 600EX-RT!

Honestly, when you're shooting weddings, reliability is basically everything. Over the years, I've seen too many people miss the kiss because their third-party flash decided to lose sync or overheat right at the wrong time. From my perspective, the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Radio Wireless Flash is worth every penny of that brand tax because it just works, every single time. Chicago venues can be a nightmare for radio signals with all the cell phones and wifi in those old buildings, and the Canon RT system is way more robust than the Godox stuff in those environments. Reasons I stick with the official gear:

  • Weather sealing is actually legit and matches your R5 bodies perfectly
  • Menus are baked into the camera UI, so you dont have to faff with the flash screen as much
  • Radio stability is rock solid even in crowded ballrooms
  • Overheat protection is predictable, not random like some clones Back when I tried the Godox V1-C TTL Round Head Flash for Canon for a few months, the foot build quality felt kinda flimsy compared to the metal on the Canon. If you're kitting out two R5s, you've already spent the money on the best bodies... dont cheap out on the light. Looking at the Canon Speedlite EL-1 High-Performance Flash is also an option if you want the absolute best battery life and recycle times, tho the price is even crazier. Stick to the Canon stuff for weddings, it pays for itself in peace of mind.
