My old Speedlite just died right before a wedding I'm shooting in Chicago next week. I've used E-TTL for years but now I'm torn. I was thinking of the 600EX II-RT but saw Godox stuff for way less. My logic was stay OEM for reliability but I'm tight on cash... what actually works best?

Ive been shooting weddings for fifteen years and let me tell you, sticking with Canon for high-stakes gigs is a total lifesaver! I once had a cheap third-party flash overheat right during the first kiss... it was a complete nightmare and I felt so terrible! Since then, Ive been obsessed with the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT because the weather sealing and communication with the camera body is just amazing! Heres how I see it:

  • Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT is the gold standard for reliability. Its incredible how it handles heat during rapid fire shooting!
  • Godox V1-C Flash for Canon is fantastic for the price and the round head gives a lovely light, but the hot shoe foot can be a bit fragile compared to OEM. Honestly, for a big Chicago wedding where things get crazy fast, I would absolutely scrape the cash together for the Canon! The peace of mind is worth every single penny when the pressure is on!

I picked up the Godox V860III-C Li-Ion Speedlite for Canon because the cost of lithium vs AA batteries made sense for my budget. It works well enough for weddings...

  • Battery lasts all day.
  • Much cheaper than Canon.
  • Build is decent. Having a backup is better than one expensive flash, so it felt like a safer bet for the money.

Hey! Just saw this... weddings in Chi-town can be intense so I totally get the stress. Quick question tho, what specific camera body are you using for the wedding? Knowing if youre on a mirrorless R-series or a classic DSLR makes a huge difference in how the flash communicates and balances on the mount! If youre looking for that sweet spot of reliability without the massive Canon tax, I'm totally obsessed with the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II for Canon. Here is why it works so well:

  • It uses the Canon RT radio system natively. This is huge because radio triggers dont need line-of-sight like the old optical ones, so you can hide flashes behind pillars or floral arrangements and they still fire every time!
  • You can get a couple of these for way less than one OEM flash, which gives you an instant backup in case one takes a tumble during the reception.
  • The build quality is surprisingly rugged and it mimics the menu system of the 600EX almost perfectly, so there is no learning curve. Honestly, having a backup is the ultimate reliability move for weddings! I love the way these behave during those rapid-fire moments on the dance floor... lmk about your camera and I can help more!

Caught this thread a bit late but man, I feel your pain. Honestly, I spent way too much on the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Wireless and was honestly so disappointed with the battery performance during long events. Lugging around three sets of rechargeable AAs just to get through a reception is a total drag. If youre tight on cash, you gotta look at the li-ion options because the value is just insane compared to OEM now.

  • Godox V860III-C TTL Flash for Canon - has a built-in modeling light and that 1.5s recycle time at full power is legit.
  • Godox V1-C Li-ion Round Head Flash for Canon - basically the same power output but with a much smoother light falloff. It kinda sucks that the big brands arent innovating as fast on the battery tech side, but these alternatives are a lifesaver. If you get stuck on the group or channel setup for the wedding, just ping me and I can walk you through the menu specs.
