So I just got the Canon R5 because my sister's wedding is next weekend in Seattle and I'm supposed to take some photos but I realized I literally have nothing but the camera and one lens. I went to buy a memory card and saw there are two different slots and the prices are insane? I don't even know what a CFexpress is honestly. My budget is pretty tight now like maybe $500 left after the camera body destroyed my savings. I'm totally lost on what I actually need to make this work without it dying or running out of space mid-ceremony. What are the absolute must-have accessories I need to buy right now so I dont mess this up?
Adding my two cents here because the R5 is a total power hog and you really dont want to be caught with a dead screen during the kiss. Honestly, you should prioritize batteries as much as the memory cards. If you only have the one that came in the box, you are looking at maybe 300-400 shots if you are lucky with the EVF settings. I would suggest grabbing at least two extra Canon LP-E6NH Li-ion Battery packs or looking at the SmallRig LP-E6NH USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery which is super convenient since you can plug a USB-C cable directly into the battery itself to charge it in the car or off a power bank. For the card situation, the CFexpress Type B is what makes the camera feel fast, but you dont have to break the bank. The Lexar Professional 128GB CFexpress Type B Silver is a decent mid-range option that stays under $150 usually. It is plenty fast for wedding stills and wont bottleneck you like a slow SD card might. Just remember you will need a specific reader for it, like the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II USB 3.2 Gen 2 Reader to actually get your files onto your laptop.
In my experience, SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II V90 cards are reliable workhorses, whereas ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Gold is faster but way pricier for your R5 wedding shoot budget.
TL;DR: The R5 data rates are no joke and reliability is the only thing that matters during a ceremony. Man, I'm literally dealing with this same anxiety right now. I just picked up an R5 for a commercial gig and realized my kit was totally unprepared for the 8K raw and high-speed bursts. I totally agree with the point about the batteries tho... the power draw on the EVF when its set to the 120fps refresh rate is insane. I had a shoot last week where I thought I was fine with two spares, but I ended up sweating bullets because the low power icon started flashing right during the most important sequence. If your cards or batteries fail during that I do moment, there's no redo button. Its a stress I wouldnt wish on anyone honestly...
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
Like someone mentioned, weddings are long. Im so happy I got a padded strap because my neck didnt hurt during an eight hour shoot.
Big if true
