So I finally pulled the trigger on the R5 and honestly im kinda losing my mind with how much extra stuff you actually need to make this thing usable for a full day of shooting. I spent way too much on the body itself and now im realizing the battery life is just... not great? Like i went out to Discovery Park here in Seattle to try some bird shots and the battery was already halfway dead before I even saw a hawk. Plus the overheating thing everyone talks about for video is already stressing me out and I havent even shot a full wedding yet. I feel like i bought a Ferrari but it didnt come with tires or something lol. Im trying to figure out what is actually essential versus just marketing fluff because my bank account is screaming at me right now. I have maybe $500-600 left for the next month to get this kitted out. Do I really need those crazy expensive CFexpress cards or can I get away with SD for now? What about cages or external power? Looking for the absolute must-have accessories for the R5 that actually make a difference and wont break the bank even more...
Congrats on the body but yeah, that thing eats batteries for breakfast. You definitely need to be careful with power management or youll be staring at a black screen right when the wedding vows start. Personally, I would suggest sticking to the official Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery instead of the cheap third-party ones. I tried some off-brand ones and the camera wouldnt even hit the high speed burst mode because the voltage was off. For storage, here is what i would look at:
> Do I really need those crazy expensive CFexpress cards or can I get away with SD for now? ^ This. Also, unfortunately, the internal battery life is just pathetic for a professional body. I had issues with it dying constantly until I grabbed a Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K. It uses Power Delivery to charge the R5 while youre shooting. It is a lifesaver for long birding sessions. Honestly, skip the cards and get a ULBTER Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Canon R5 too. Canon shouldve made the glass tougher for $3k+...
Ive been super happy just sticking with fast UHS-II cards from SanDisk SD Cards. Honestly, unless you are doing heavy 8K video, you really dont need to mortgage your house for those CFexpress ones. Also, any cage from SmallRig Camera Cage works well to help with heat. It gives the body more surface area to breathe and keeps things cool.
