I've been shooting Fuji for like seven years now and I usually swear by the native XF primes but honestly I'm starting to get frustrated with how clunky my old 23mm f1.4 (the original R version) is getting. I have this big trip to NYC planned for next month and I'm getting really anxious about my gear setup because I need something way snappier for the subway and fast-moving crowds. I've been looking at the Sigma options since they finally came to X-mount but I'm torn. I've literally never used a lens without a physical aperture ring on my X-Pro3 so I'm worried the muscle memory is gonna mess me up and I'll miss the shot while fumbling with the command dial.

Here's what I'm looking for specifically:

  • Budget is strictly under $550 because the flights were crazy expensive
  • Compact enough to not look like a huge tourist or draw attention
  • AF speed is priority number one because I hate missing focus on candid street shots
  • Needs to handle low light well since I do a lot of night shooting around the Lower East Side

Should I go for the 18-50mm f2.8 zoom for the versatility or is the 30mm f1.4 prime a better bet for that classic street look? I keep hearing mixed things about the AF motors on the older Sigma primes compared to the newer zoom...

Dude you gotta go with the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for that NYC trip! I have run some tests on the AF-C tracking and it is miles ahead of the older f1.4 trio. Since you are worried about speed in the subway, this thing is an absolute beast. Honestly, f2.8 is plenty for the LES if you are pushing the ISO a bit on that X-Pro3 sensor. Here is why it wins:

  • The stepping motor is incredible and just snaps to focus instantly... way faster than the original Fuji 23mm.
  • It is stupid small. Like, it fits in a jacket pocket even though it is a zoom. Perfect for blending in.
  • Optical quality is amazing for the price, basically sharp from corner to corner. Losing the aperture ring takes like two days to get used to, then you wont even think about it. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary is solid but the AF can hunt a tiny bit in low light compared to the newer zoom tech.

I've been geeking out over the specs on these Sigma primes lately and you seriously cant go wrong! If you want that classic look, the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary is phenomenal. Its stepping motor is basically silent and way more responsive than the old clutch-style focus on your Fuji R lens. It's got incredibly high resolving power for the price, hitting those high line pairs even wide open. It's gonna look amazing on your X-Pro3. However, for the NYC subway, the Sigma 16mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary is a total beast. It's wider, which helps when you're stuck in a crowded train car and cant back up. The f/1.4 aperture is a lifesaver for night shooting in the Lower East Side without cranking ISO into grain-city. Tbh the lack of an aperture ring is just a mental hurdle... map your front dial to aperture and you're golden. Both are way under your 550 budget too!

Tried the Sigma 23mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary recently and honestly was kinda bummed. The optics are sharp but shooting without an aperture ring on an X-Pro3 feels like driving a manual car without a gear stick. It's snappy for subway shots tho. Quick tips:

  • Map the front dial to aperture ASAP
  • Stick to AF-C for moving crowds Really wish they hadn't skipped that ring.
