honestly so fed up with my old canon 85mm it keeps missing focus during weddings and im done. ready to jump to sigma art but cant decide which is best for portraits on my 5D.

  • budget under 900
  • need it for a shoot next month in philly
  • must be sharp at 1.4

thinking 85mm or 105mm but idk...

I would suggest being careful with the 105mm because its a total brick. Honestly, your wrist will feel it.

Just saw this thread and had to jump in! Re: "I would suggest being careful with the 105mm..." - man, that weight is no joke! I did a huge outdoor wedding last summer and by hour eight, my forearms were shaking like crazy. I remember the first time I pulled my files into Lightroom after switching my main kit to those heavy Art primes... the level of detail was actually terrifying! I could see individual eyelashes from across the room. I used to obsess over the MTF charts and the chromatic aberration data before making the jump, and the real-world results actually lived up to the hype for once. A few things that really helped me out:

  • Spending a Sunday afternoon with the Sigma USB Dock for Canon EF to fine-tune the AF points for my specific body.
  • Swapping to a heavy-duty dual harness to handle the extra glass weight.
  • Updating the firmware immediately to fix some weird pulsing issues I had in low light. It was such a relief to finally trust my gear again during those high-pressure ceremony moments. Having that tack-sharp focus at f/1.4 completely changed how I frame my shots now... honestly, the resolving power is just on another level compared to the older stuff I was using! Once I got the micro-adjustments dialed in, my keepers went through the roof.
