I finally pulled the trigger on a Sigma fp L for my upcoming trip to the Dolomites next month and honestly I'm so stoked but the body is way smaller than I expected haha. I've been looking at the SmallRig cage since it's cheap and easy to find here in London but some reviewers say it makes reaching the top buttons a pain and then there's the 8Sinn one which looks gorgeous but it's way pricier and I'm not sure if it actually helps with the grip. I have pretty big hands so I'm worried about cramps during long shoots. My budget is like 150 bucks max because I spent way too much on lenses already. Which one actually feels the most natural to hold for a few hours?
> I have pretty big hands so I'm worried about cramps during long shoots. Quick reply while I've got a sec. In my experience, the SmallRig Cage for Sigma FP Series CCM2518 is a bit cramped near the top dial. I've tried many setups and honestly you should just add the SmallRig Handgrip for Sigma fp Series HPS2431. Over the years I've found that extra 30mm of depth is way more important than the cage brand for preventing hand fatigue during long hikes. It fits your budget perfectly too.
Ive been using the SmallRig Cage for Sigma FP Series CCM2518 for a year and honestly I'm super satisfied. To fix the grip issue for my big hands, I just added a SmallRig Wooden Side Handle 2093. It feels great and keeps the whole setup way under your budget. No complaints about the buttons once you get used to it... it just works.
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
A solid grip is basically mandatory if youre gonna be out for hours. I always prioritize a setup that feels like it wont slip out of my hand if I get distracted or tired. It actually reminds me of this one time I was shooting a wedding and my gear felt so flimsy that I spent the whole ceremony just gripping the camera body tight because I didnt trust the strap. My hand was actually stuck in a claw shape by the time the cake was cut. Honestly the food at that place was incredible tho, they had these mini sliders that were way better than the actual meal. I think I ate like six of them while the DJ was playing some weird 80s synth remix. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
