Panasonic has just announced the new vlogging camera - Lumix S9, which flash do you recommend to pair with ?

Building on the earlier suggestion about the sensor readout speed, i actually think the traditional flash route is a bit of a headache for this specific body. I tried using my standard kit for a portrait session and the banding was just unusable due to the slow electronic shutter. It was basically a mess. I ended up trying a diy approach instead of a dedicated strobe.

  • I rigged up a small bracket for some high-CRI led panels i had in the workshop.
  • Switched to constant illumination for fill instead of a strobe pulse.
  • This setup lets me preview the exact light falloff on the rear screen before hitting the shutter. It was a steep learning curve but the results are way more consistent than trying to time a flash with that specific readout. Definitely a decent option if you dont want to deal with the 1/50 sync limit. Let me know if you want the specs for the panels i used, always happy to share the build details.

  • Lumix S9, which flash do you recommend to pair with ? The sync speed is basically limited by the sensors rolling shutter readout speed, which is a bit of a hurdle for flash compared to a mechanical shutter! Nikon usually has their speedlight protocols dialed in a bit tighter for high-speed sync, but I absolutely love the Lumix color profiles so its a fun challenge to work around. I actually spent half the night digging through my storage unit for my old light meters because I got distracted thinking about the Inverse Square Law and ended up finding my high school yearbooks instead. Spent like three hours looking at everyones terrible haircuts from 2005 and wondering why we all thought cargo pants were a good idea. My cat actually knocked over a stack of old National Geographic magazines while I was doing it and I just ended up reading about deep sea squids until sunrise... anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there!
