im freaking out a little because my trip to tromso is in literally two weeks and i still havent picked a shutter release for my z6ii. i finally saved up for this arctic trip to see the northern lights and the last thing i want is gear failure in the middle of a frozen field. i keep looking at the official nikon ml-l7 because it seems like the safest bet but i read some horror stories on reddit about the bluetooth pairing being super flaky and dropping connection right when you need it. that sounds like a nightmare. then i saw the vello wireless shutterboss which has way more features for the price but i dont know if that lcd screen is gonna freeze up or if the batteries will just quit in the norwegian cold. i have about $100 to spend on this but honestly i could go a bit higher if it means i dont miss the shot of a lifetime. id even consider a wired mc-dc2 just for the peace of mind but having a wire dangling in the wind seems like it might cause shake. im really torn between the vello and the official nikon one or if there is some hidden third option i missed that is actually bulletproof? what do you guys think is the absolute most reliable one for extreme weather?
> im really torn between the vello and the official nikon one or if there is some hidden third option i missed that is actually bulletproof? Honestly, dont waste your cash on the fancy wireless stuff for a trip like that. Batteries absolutely tank in sub-zero temps and trying to pair Bluetooth with frozen fingers is just asking for a massive headache. I have been super happy with the Vello RS-N2 II Wired Remote Switch for Nikon for ages and have zero complaints. It is way cheaper than the official gear and works well even when things get icy. If you are worried about the wire dangling, just wrap it once around your tripod leg or use some tape. Its a simple fix. Seriously, save that extra $80 for some heavy duty wool socks... you are gonna need them! Wired is basically bulletproof since it doesnt need its own battery just to fire the shutter. If you absolutely need a timer for intervals, the Pixel TW-283 LCD Wireless Timer Remote Control for Nikon is a great budget pick that works well, but for pure reliability in the cold, I always go wired.
