Ugh I have been staring at B&H and different review sites for like three hours now and I still dont know what flash to buy for my X-T4. The wedding is in exactly three weeks—my sisters best friend is getting married and I stupidly promised to do the indoor shots—and I am panicking because the lighting in that venue is gonna be complete trash and I have zero experience with Fuji-specific lighting yet.
I was looking at the Fujifilm EF-X500 because obviously it should work best with the camera right? Like, native should mean no bugs. But its so freaking expensive for how old it is and I keep reading these horror stories that it eats through AA batteries like crazy which sounds like a total nightmare in the middle of a ceremony when I'm already stressed. Plus $450 for a flash that came out years ago feels like a rip off.
So then my logic was to look at the Godox V1. People love the round head and the falloff looks way smoother in the sample shots Ive seen. The lithium battery is a huge plus for me because I dont want to be fumbling with AA packs in the dark but then I saw a bunch of forum threads saying the hot shoe pins on the Fuji version are super flimsy and just snap off. Is that still a thing or did they fix the build quality recently? I'm located in a smaller town so I cant just go to a shop and feel them in person, I have to order online and hope for the best.
Im also considering the Godox V860III since it's a bit cheaper than the V1 and basically does the same thing but I'm worried it's going to make the X-T4 way too top-heavy and awkward to hold for eight hours straight. My budget is strictly under $400 because I already spent way too much on a new prime lens this year. I just need something reliable with good TTL because I wont have time to fiddle with manual settings while people are dancing and moving around. Should I just bite the bullet on the official Fuji flash even with the battery issues or is the Godox V1 actually safe to use now? I'm honestly so stuck...
Unfortunately, the Fujifilm EF-X500 Flash is a letdown because it lacks a modern Li-ion battery and the recycle times are not as good as expected. Godox pins are still kinda flimsy tho, which is a bummer.
Building on the earlier suggestion, are you shooting in a big venue or somewhere more intimate? I once used the Godox V860III-F TTL Li-ion Flash for a wedding and it was amazing! The battery is a total beast and didnt die once. If youre worried about weight tho, the Godox V350F Li-ion TTL Flash is a tiny life-saver that wont break your wrist or budget! I love it.
Just catching up on this thread. Tbh I disagree with the idea that the hardware brand is the main hurdle here, even on a budget. Technical specs like capacitor discharge rates and voltage regulation matter way more than the logo on the box. It reminds me of a wedding I helped with back in 2019. My cousin was shooting in this converted warehouse and the place had massive industrial refrigerators on the same circuit as the hall. Every time those compressors kicked in, the voltage would sag just enough that the flash capacitors couldnt hit a full charge in time. We were standing there with expensive setups but couldnt get a single consistent exposure because the recycle cycle was totally out of sync with the venues power draw. It was a total nightmare trying to troubleshoot the electrical load during the first dance while the lights were flickering. We spent more time looking for a multimeter than actually framing shots. Crazy how the venue itself can just tank your whole technical setup regardless of what youve got mounted on your hot shoe...
