I am so over trying to navigate the Canon flash ecosystem right now it is actually making my head spin. I just upgraded to an R6 Mark II but I am still keeping my 90D as a backup and I need a speedlite that actually works on both without costing like five hundred dollars. Canon wants way too much for their brand name stuff and honestly my budget is totally tapped out after buying the new body so I have maybe 170 bucks to spend tops. I have a wedding shoot coming up in Chicago in three weeks and I really dont want to be stuck using just natural light if the reception venue is a cave which it probably will be.

I have been looking at a few options but I am totally torn.

  • Godox V860III (it has that lithium battery which sounds nice but is it worth the extra cash?)
  • Yongnuo YN685 II (much cheaper but I heard the build quality is kinda hit or miss)
  • Godox TT685II (runs on AAs which I have plenty of but idk if the recycle time is gonna kill me)

I am leaning toward the V860III because of the battery but then I see people saying the TT685II is basically the same thing for less money and I am just confused. Does anyone have experience using these specifically on the newer mirrorless bodies? I heard some flashes have issues with the pins on the R series and I really cant afford to buy something that just errors out mid-ceremony. Which one should I actually pull the trigger on...

> Godox V860III (it has that lithium battery which sounds nice but is it worth the extra cash?) I've used Godox for years and honestly that lithium battery is a total lifesaver. In my experience, fumbling with AAs in a dark venue is a recipe for disaster. Just grab the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-ion Flash for Canon. It fits the R6 shoe perfectly and wont glitch out. If you're really on a budget, the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon is okay but recycles slower.

honestly, i spent like three hours researching this exact pin issue when i got my R6. there is a legendary thread on the reddit photography sub that breaks down every single technical voltage difference between these flashes. just search godox vs yongnuo canon r series compatibility on google and its like the first result. that post saved my life before a big gig last year, definitely worth the five minute read.
