What's the best external flash for a Canon Rebel T7 that's actually beginner friendly and wont break the bank? I've been trying to take more indoor photos lately but the little pop-up flash on my T7 is just awful, it makes everyone look like ghosts and the shadows are way too harsh. I'm actually supposed to be the unofficial photographer for my sister's baby shower next month here in Chicago and the venue is this old restaurant with really dim lighting, so I definitely need something better before then.
I spent a few hours looking stuff up and I keep seeing the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT pop up as the best choice for Rebels, but it's like $300 which is way over my $150 budget. Then I saw a bunch of people recommending the Godox TT685II or even the cheaper Yongnuo models. The Godox looks okay but some reviews say the menus are super confusing for newbies and I'm worried I'll be fumbling with settings while the party is happening. Does TTL really matter that much for a beginner or should I just try to learn manual flash from the start? I just want something that works reliably without me needing a PhD in lighting science to get a decent shot...
Honestly, skip the expensive Canon stuff! You absolutely need TTL for a baby shower because things move way too fast for manual fumbling. I totally love the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon since it is a total beast for the price.
> Re: "Honestly, skip the expensive Canon stuff! You absolutely..." Totally agree!! Spending $300 on a flash when you are just starting is wild when brands like Godox exist. One thing you HAVE to check tho... some versions of the Rebel T7 actually do not have the center sync pin on the hot shoe. Canon did that to force people into buying their own expensive gear, which is super annoying! But dont worry, the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon works perfectly with it because they updated the tech specifically for those Rebel models. You asked about TTL and honestly? It is a total lifesaver for events like a baby shower! It stands for Through The Lens, which basically means the camera and flash talk to each other to figure out the power automatically. Without it, you would be changing settings every single time someone moves three feet or the lighting shifts slightly. It makes things so much faster. The menus can look intimidating at first, but once you set it to TTL mode, you basically never have to touch them again during the party. If you can stretch that budget by like twenty or thirty bucks, seriously check out the Godox V860III-C Li-ion Flash for Canon. The V in the name means it uses a big rechargeable lithium battery instead of four AA batteries. It is AMAZING. No more carrying around heavy bags of spares or waiting forever for the flash to recycle (recharge) between shots. You will be snapping away at that baby shower without missing a single smile! Just point the flash head at a white ceiling to bounce the light... it makes that soft, professional look you are after instantly. It is like magic!
