Which flash units work best with Canon 90D for indoor portraits?

So I finally upgraded to the 90D a few months back and I'm really trying to step up my indoor portrait game. I've been doing these shots in my basement where the light is honestly trash. I looked into the Godox V1 because everyone on YouTube says the round head makes the light falloff look way smoother but then I saw a bunch of forum posts saying the Canon 430EX III-RT is more reliable for the AF assist beam on actual Canon bodies.

My logic was that if I stay in the brand ecosystem it might be easier to setup but the price jump for a used 600EX is kind of a lot right now. I'm working with a pretty tight budget of maybe 250 or 300 bucks tops because I just dropped way too much on an 85mm f1.8 lens last week lol. I'm also kinda confused about whether I need a separate transmitter if I want to move the flash off-camera later on or if the 90D can just trigger them wirelessly on its own.

I read somewhere that the 90D has an integrated transmitter but then someone else said that only works with specific older flashes? It's all getting a bit overwhelming and I have a shoot for my sister's kids coming up in three weeks so I need to make a decision soon... does the Godox stuff actually play nice with the 90D or should I just stick to the basic Canon speedlites?

Ive been shooting with Canon DSLRs for a decade and honestly the Godox vs Canon debate comes down to how you plan to grow. The 90D can trigger some flashes using its pop-up as an optical master, but its kinda flaky indoors. If you want to move the flash off-camera—which you should definitely do for those portraits—the Godox ecosystem is way more budget friendly. The Godox V1-C Round Head Flash works great on my 90D. The AF assist is decent, tho maybe not quite as snappy as a native Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT, but for your needs itll be fine. Since you have 300 bucks, grab the V1 and a Godox X2T-C Wireless Flash Trigger. Radio triggers are way better than the 90Ds built-in optical system because they work through walls and softboxes. Its a much more reliable way to step up your lighting game without breaking the bank.

Godox definitely plays nice with the 90D! Honestly, grab the Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Flash for Canon and dont look back. The lithium battery is a total game changer because it recycles so fast!! Youll want the Godox XPro-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger for Canon to go off-camera. It communicates via 2.4G radio, which is way more reliable than the 90Ds built-in optical system. Youll love it!

No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
